Liston’s best weight was around 212 lb - as he was for the Williams fights. All densely packed muscle with low body fat. He looked somewhat bigger than most others carrying the same weight. On the other hand, older Louis with a few extra pounds did not look so small alongside Liston nor Ali for that matter. Joe’s best prime weight was about 200 lb but later career he carried about 207 lb quite nicely. Williams tripled up nicely with the left hook against Sonny but then see Louis’ triple left hooks on granite chinned Maxie Baer for the second KD. Sublime. The bell ending round 3 “saved” Baer - though I doubt Max viewed it as being saved. He would’ve wished it was all over, right then and there as he sat on the canvas. He probably cursed the bell.
Yeah, but he was still a LhW and he even started his amateur carrer as a MW, just like Patterson. Same goes for Marty Marshall.
At that age Klitchko and Lewis were champions and there were no excuses for their losses as much as for your hero Liston. Frazier would beat him, Sonny didn't like pressure by someone who could take a punch and give one, and he could do that for 15 rounds.
There are plenty of Liston and Louis pictures together, and Louis seems taller and wider with shorter hands.
Different fighters mature and become over the hill at different stages of their career case in point Lewis and Tyson were the same age but Mike was shot to pieces whereas Lewis was still in his prime when they met
I love watching Joe Louis in full flow but if I had a gun to my head I’m taking Liston all day long here, bigger, stronger, his jab would be a big problem for Joe and although Joe would have his moments I think Sonny would be too powerful and would take him apart, Liston stoppage
Nope, when someone is 38 he is 38, no matter in how good shape is he. Foreman was champion at 50, Lewis,Walcott and Holyfield in their late 30s.
We have to be reasonable - we could wind Leotis all the way back to his birth weight, which I don’t happen to have on hand but we can give him 14 lbs top, for the sake of the exercise. I had an Uncle who came into the world at 14 lbs - the size of a freaking bowling ball - but that’s another story. Martin carried 199 lbs perfectly, no fat. That night, Liston engaged a bonafide HW. As to Liston, he was old, and his condition made worse due to his lifestyle out of the ring - alcohol and drugs. Jack Johnson, at age 22-23, weighed about 170 lbs - but he has never been described as a SMW who went on to win the HW Title.
Click his name, then the ignore button will come up. Absolute worst poster I've seen in my ten years here and has been permabanned three times. I admit, I can't bring myself to report him because he's to damn entertaining.
Still does not change the fact that the man was a MW and then later a LHW. He was a natural small LHW. Louis was 218 for Marciano fight and Ali was 230 for Lyle fight, both were in great shape but they were not comfortable with that weight, each 15 pounds more than their prime weight. Same goes for Toney. If he would use that as excuse for his losses then he should not fight. A fight is what matters and if a fighter is not well prepared or old that is his fault, not his opponent's fault, and he can not use that as an excuse for losing against bums. Harry Greb fought HWs at 180 pounds but was never a true LHW let alone a HW.
