Although Holyfield had good whiskers, Tyson clearly had a better chin. Holyfield had better recuperative powers though, so, I would give him the edge in stamina.
This content is protected Round 10 from the first fight Holyfield Vs. Bowe tells me the answer to your question is Holyfield. Tyson never in his career gave something like this, towards the end of the fight, in a fight he was losing, and lost
Holy slightly better chin imo but Mike's chin was pretty underrated. He had a good set of whiskers, I think he just wilted a bit more under pressure.
Holyfield for me. But it is not a criticism I have towards Tyson, who I think was very durable. I just think Holyfield was a notch above
In an overall sense? Not taking into account their natural build? Definitely Tyson. But as has been mentioned, Holyfield's ability to recuperate is almost bizarre. It shouldn't be. It's like Vince McMahon. Shouldn't exist, but all be damned if it isn't outlandishly existing out there.
Clearly Tyson had the better chin. Holyfield got wobbled by a lot of guys even mediocre ones. How many times Tyson got wobbled? His feats of trading blows with Stewart, Douglas, Holmes, Bruno, Bonecrusher Rudduck, etc surpass Holyfields feats of tanking. Stamina wise they are probably even. Holyfield was an energy machine yes, but people forget Tyson had a more energy intensive style and often was forced to maintain it for 12 rounds against guys he couldn’t just knockout. That takes serious stamina bobbing and weaving the way he was doing it.
Stewart didn’t hit Tyson and Bruno badly shook Tyson in their first fight as did Bonecrusher when he decided to let his hands go in the last 10 seconds of their fight. Holmes wasn’t a puncher nor was Douglas even though he knocked Tyson out. Holyfield himself hadn’t scored a legit stoppage for 5 years until he battered Tyson to defeat, so not a massive puncher either. Holyfield stood up to bombs from Lewis (who again knocked Tyson out), Bowe, Mercer, Stewart Foreman, Douglas (if you reckon he was a puncher) Rahman etc etc. Holyfield had a better chin, stamina, was tougher and more determined and courageous.
Tyson took a lot more hard clean hits from Lewis. I don’t think you can compare those two fights. Lewis was wary of Holyfield’s power and as such, he didn’t unload for sustained periods of time. Tyson had zero stamina when he fought Lewis. So once Lewis realized that, he started to unload and it still took him a long time to get him out of there. Tyson took clean left uppercuts from Razor RUddock and never went down. Douglas and Holyfield only stopped him after sustained beatings that lasted several rounds. I do not ever recall anyone knocking Tyson down with one or two shots. His chin was made of iron. IMO Tyson had a slightly better chin but Holy had more toughness and ability to fight back when hurt.
Holyfield doesn't run the gamut of Tyson's 80's foes without getting Bert Cooper'd or dropped completely. Nor does he walk through the shots Tyson took against Ruddock either. Both had solid chins but Tyson has the better one shot for shot no question. He was always coming forward and that amplifies the effect of the punch. He was never really off his feet besides that massive punch combo he took from Douglas which was insane. Holyfield on the other hand had been hurt and staggered more times. Tyson's style was taxing on his opponent as well. But Holyfield never friggin stopped throwing, always bouncing on his feet. Amazing.
Even in 1991 I thought Holyfield would beat Tyson: more multifacted, better stamina and would be able to take Tyson's power.
