Canelo's boast got me think about similar things in the past, and I actually don't think it's that common. Fighters do actually in most cases seem to have the good sense not to say such things. There is of course the infamous jock strap comment by Holmes. And Holy said he'd "tear up" Louis. I think Ali also said he'd beat Louis, but that was in response to Louis saying he'd beat him, I think. Otherwise, I can't come to think of any more instances, but must be some.
Can't think of an instance, but I'd put money on Lennox Lewis having said something to that effect. He was a bit arrogant like that.
I never liked Tyson's public persona when he was active, but I did like how respectful he always was to greats of the past. I'm sure he felt he could beat them, because that's the mindset of athletes on that level, but his respect did seem sincere, though. It would be easy to say "Dempsey was just a smaller, cruder version of me", but he instead only expressed genuine awe of him as far as I've heard. I really like that in a fighter, genuine respect of what has come before and set the foundation for current fighters. No one showed that more than Tyson imo. A true student of boxing history.
Yes he did, just like he said some arrogant things about McCall too but he was the one who was KOed cold by that same McCall.
Fury most famously claimed no man in history could beat him on the night he defeated Wilder in the trilogy.
Holyfield saying Louis wouldn’t be hard work and he’d tear him up? Cheeky, roided up basterd. Though ‘Vander, like Max Schmeling, might’ve spotted a couple more fatal flaws in Louis’ game - Joe’s vulnerabilities to head butts and nut punches. Two deficiencies in Louis’ game that were never taken advantage of - therefore, The Bomber never corrected them during his low-tech era.
You’re so right Boke, Tyson is King in that regard. I love that strand to Mike’s persona. Another example has been Mike bowing to Liston in terms of being the greatest intimidator - even though Mike himself was downright scary and knew how to work it. Mike is a big fan of Ali also and he wasn’t too impressed when Floyd Mayweather claimed that he (Floyd) is greater than Muhammad. Mike’s animosity toward Floyd wasn’t in respect of himself but on behalf of Ali. Floyd Patterson would be another guy who never boasted about being superior to any past masters of the game.
He's very respectful and gracious these days. Barely wants to take credit for impressive wins -- when asked about his fight with Holmes, all he does is make excuses for Holmes. How many guys score a blowout win over an ATG and then do nothing but make excuses for the other guy? Credit to him.
Anybody see that show where Bert Sugar is listing the best ten Heavies, & they have Larry Holmes on. Sugar kicks off his list with Holmes at no. 10 & when host Brian Kenny asks Holmes where he’d rate himself, he says number one. There is laughter on the assumption of a joke - Holmes then proceeds to make everyone quietly uncomfortable as they realise he is deadly serious - & medically delusional.
Look, most ATGs think they are number 1. Marciano may give respect to the likes of Louis and Dempsey, but he does think he can lick em both. This content is protected
