He would've gone for it anyway, but whupping Canelo would've turned him into a superstar and exponentially increased his earning power at 175. I guess he'll have to do it the hard way now, and it doesn't get much harder than Beterbiev/Bivol.
Oh, so you're concerned about PBCs financial well being? What a guy!! Lol First of all, Canelo never said NO to the Benavidez fight. Secondly, if we use your narrative, isn't it awesome when a boxer outsmarts a sleazy Promoter? I certainly think so.
Except that they offered Canelo 55 million to fight him at 168. Hmm... Looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, smells like a duck...
How many times does someone have to tell you 'no' before you take no for answer, IsaL? How many different ways does Canelo have to show you that he is not interested in fighting the guy? What else does he have to do?
Why did Benavidez move up to 175 to fight Gvozdyk who btw Canelo will make money off that fight since Canelo promotes him... Why didn't Benavidez explore fights with Mbilli, Morrel, Berlanga, Munguia? And most importantly Why didn't he enforce his mandatory status a week from now?
This is the type of hand picked fight the boxing community rakes other fighters over the coals for when a totally obvious opponent is right there and wants the smoke. Canelo fought Kovalev (who was younger that Gvozdyk will be when Benevidez fights him) and also held a belt but that fight was a "joke". Fickle bunch...haha Gvozdyk is going to lose. Beterbiev essentially retired him. Yeah he beat a ranked fighter in Bolotniks but... Who is he? Who has he beat?
Benavidez is moving up because the WBC has made it clear that he will not get the fight. He was supposed to be the mandatory as soon as he beat Lemeuix in 2022, then after he beat Plant, and then immediately after he beat Andrade. March 2024 was never anything more than an arbitrary deadline that gave the WBC sufficient time to rerout DB and get him off of Canelo's porch. Benavidez and his team knows this. If Canelo ever shows any genuine interest, they can still fight at some point. As is, a fight against anyone else at 168 is a road to nowhere. There is nothing DB can do to be any closer to a Canelo fight, and there is no further reason for him to linger at 168. It's over, for now. But the fight died before DB moved up and not after, as you are trying to spin it.
Oh ok. Well he can become the mandatory for the WBO, IBF, WBA, or he can become the man at SMW by building a decent resume, like having Minguia, or Morrel, Mbilli, Berlanga on his resume. Why move up to fight a Canelo promotions fighter?
Alot of people believe this is how it works. But honestly even if he beats Canelo it won't make him a star, he's gotta put in the work the same way Canelo did and others before did. Just because you beat the man doesn't all of a sudden make you a star lol. How's that working out for Bivol? Or any of the guys that beat Pac, or Ruiz at heavyweight? You just get temporary attention unless you were already on the steps of stardom. All these guys aren't after that with Canelo, they're after career high paydays or retirement checks however you want to see it.
Benavidez already is on the steps of stardom. Fighting on PPV in pretty big fights, selling out Vegas, lots of hype. Bivol was a nobody back then and still is now. Wiping out Canelo would have given him the next big step but he has been robbed of it.
This is a silly term. You build your legacy from big fights namely fighting big names. That is how Canelo became popular , because legends game him the chance to fight. You can't build a big legacy fighting no names.
Canelo built his legacy by fighting everyone, big names or not. Lara, Trout, Jacobs, we're not big names. And when he fought the big names during his rise he always compromised his purse. For example, his purse against Mayweather was 5 million. Fighters today demand three times their biggest payday to fight him, sometimes more. Canelo paid his dues. Today fighters don't fight each other and still demand the big name fight with the big name purse. How long has Benavidez been a top SMW? Seven, eight years? And look at his resume. Plant a Canelo leftover, and Andrade a former career Super Welterweight.
The one thing we can agree on is that we both want Canelo vs Benavidez. Say what you want about me and my Canelo fandom, but I'm not OK with hm refusing to fight Benavidez this year. I've made it very clear that he needs to fight Benavidez in May or September whether he's required to or not. My point is simply this - if for some reason Canelo refuses to fight Benavidez this year, or is allowed to, then I'll absolutely call it a duck. However if Canelo agrees to fight him in May or September, then Benavidez should agree and accept that. September is about 6 months from now, that's not a long way off. IF Benavidez knows he could get the Canelo fight in September (which at least according to the WBC Prez sounds like that's the situation) but he chooses to move up to 175 in June, then that in my view (barring some kind of other legit reason for that that we don't know about) would be Benavidez ducking the fight. That's all I'm saying. Lets let this play out and see what happens before we jump to conclusions. This goes for everyone. Lets NOT accuse either Canelo or Benavidez of ducking anything until we know the full story. I'll be the first to stand up and accuse Canelo of ducking Benavidez if he refuses to fight Benavidez this year, if he drops the belt to avoid him, obviously that would be pathetic. If the WBC President lets him hold the belt until next year, I'll criticize BOTH the WBC President for giving Canelo preferential treatment and for Canelo for not showing a willingness to make the fight happen this year if that in fact happens. But I'm not going to assume that's gonna happen like many in here have and jump to conclusions based on that theory. That's my stance on this. On the flip side, if Benavidez actually chooses to move up to 175 in June and doesn't enforce the mandatory, then I would expect everyone on here to criticize Benavidez for ducking Canelo. So lets wait and see how this plays out and not jump to conclusions. I would encourage both sides to make the fight happen in either May or September. I have no issue with Canelo fighting Charlo in May if he agrees to fight Benavidez in September should he beat Charlo. But that said, I would prefer he fights Benavidez ASAP (May) as I'm sure everyone in here would.
