This fight could have happen during the late 1980s. They both beat Iran Barkley in a MW title fight as well. Interestingly Duran beat Barkley just one month prior to when Michael Nunn knocked out Sumbu Kalambay in shocking fashion. Had Kalambay decided not to face Nunn and instead fought Roberto Duran just coming off his big win over Barkley how would this turn out? Could Duran have pulled off a convincing win or would Kalambay outbox the older legend at that stage of his career?
I agree with Xplosive. Kalambay easily on points. Sumbu was a class act, Duran fought superbly against Barkley but Iran was easy to hit. Kalambay was not and he´d just beaten undefeated Herol Graham and Mike McCallum as well befuddling Barkley over 15.
Would be a close fight. Duran beat Barkley at 160 and gave Hagler a tough match. Kalambay was a natural at middle with an excellent chin and superb boxing skills. I’m gonna take a chance and say Kalambay wins a close decision.
After beating Barkley ,Duran in my opinion would lose to Sumbu not because he couldn't win but he hardly ever put together back to back solid efforts at that age and at 38 he'd look like he did against Leonard in the 3rd fight. I'd make Sumbu a 60-40 favorite
Sumbu was about as big as Iran, In there bout they looked about the same size - I don’t think Roberto could’ve overcome a guy that big who could fight the way SK did.
