And the case with Ali, I believe, where he retired and Holmes wasn't the true champ till he faced him.
Please, if you think unranked 350 pound Tyson Fury after a 2 year coke binge vs rank 200 HW contender Sefer Seferi in a 10 round bout was for the HW championship of the world you must be smoking crack, with all due respect. Again, I believe it's context more than anything. The magical "lineal" title only holds meaning and power if that said fighter is active and the clear number 1 in their division regardless of belts.
It has meaning because of its history. Belts are meaningless as anyone can create one. No one can create the history.
That’s what they used to do. Until Golden Boy took over the Ring Magazine. Now it can be looked at as just another belt. Bit like RJJ at light heavyweight when Dariusz was the Linael champion.
I wouldn't say it's just another belt. It still 99% of the time corresponds with the lineage and if it doesn't, the holder is usually the best guy in the division.
He was 23-1 with a decision loss to Charr. If he was rated 200th is was because he was coming up from cruiserweight. Not that hes a good title defense opponent, hes one of the worst in recent memory but hes not the level of bad where I'd consider it a non title bout because of that. If in your opinion the 10 rounds is enough for it not to count thats a different discussion. If the lineal title didn't hold power Usyk wouldn't fight Fury he wouldn't have to. The idea that champions are supposed to be fighting the best fighter in the division every single defense is not really reasonable IMO. Thats an arbitrary thing and theres no right or wrong place to draw the line. IMO no one decision Fury has made as champ has been outrageous its the accumulation of questionable choices along with his personality that have given him his reputation as a duck.
Your first mistake. Study and know the history. Ignore “organizations”. Organizations and plastic belts are meaningless.
Why the obsession with “organizations”? If you fully understand history organizations are the last thing to consider if at all. The organizations are the reason boxing is a POS the past 20-30 years. They don’t care if we have five champions in every division and you sit around worrying about them?
So Fury needs to beat Usyk to become the lineal champion - that's paradoxical. And If Usyk beats Fury; Usyk REMAINS the lineal champion - which is also paradoxical. Fury is the current lineal champion. This is the only way out of the paradox. So that the lineal champion would still be the man who beat the man and not something else. There is nothing to crystallize here.
Because the same "organizations" you're lambasting right now are the same ones who rank the top 2 contenders vying for the "lineal" championship after it becomes vacant.
I am kind if shocked you don’t understand how boxing history and the lineal title “work”. It’s perfectly ok once the champion retires to continue the lineage by having the two to challengers face one another for the vacant title. This occurred multiple times in the heavyweight division. Perfectly ok. Spinks because he beat Holmes was the true champion the night he faced Tyson. Tyson did not beat any true champions prior to beating Spinks. All were contenders holding a paper title with a plastic belt. Holmes Spinks Tyson Douglas Holyfield Notice no Berbick, Thomas, etc on that list.
I still see Fury as the genuine lineal champ but if a fighter retires then a few months later changes their mind it’s not the Ring magazines fault for giving it someone else what should they do have no champion for a year while Fury decides his future last time he retired he was away for 3 years and ballooned up on weight should the Ring magazine have waited then it’s all complicated because Fury never sticks to one thing
