This content is protected Good scrap. Vonzell is a fun, forgotten fighter from the stacked seventies & eighties domestic light heavyweight picture. Middle of the pack by that era's standards, which of course leaves plenty of daylight for being elite by most others'. He trained with Angelo Dundee in the pros, and beat Marvin Johnson and John Conteh in the amateurs. Also he's the godfather of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. That hair...is certainly a product of its time, innit?
Kind of a dicey stoppage, tbh. Vonz was somewhat hurt and tired in equal measure, but I think the ref from his angle mistook that final right hand for being a lot more flush and damaging than it was.
Fair, but given how he appeared and the manner in which he went down, the writing appeared to be on the wall for Johnson. Good long range boxer, though with a very educated left hand.
Perez got a good long look into Vonz’s eyes on a break a bit before that and he was clearly stepping in post holes. Don’t think he threw a single punch from the start of the barrage that put him down until the stoppage and took several clean shots. I think it’s a fair call that he was given every chance to show he had recovered. He even nods yes a couple of times when it’s stopped before protesting.
