Prime Liston would obviously maul Primo, but would he have a chance against the shot version of Liston that beat Chuck Wepner?

Probably not, unless he gets up 5 or 6 times and Sonny's gassed by the 8th round

I’m not a huge advocate of Carnera either. But can it really be said that he nothing that would hurt Liston ? Seems to me that he could punch a bit. And remember we’re talking about an aged Liston he’d be facing.

You could make an argument that Wepner (who was a very big man himself, though not quite as big as Carnera) was better than Primo himself.

I would be interested in hearing what that argument would be.

Primo Carnera would wear him down, not because he's good but because Liston gas tank is awful.
Btw Primo was more skilled than that bum Wepner who bleeds more than if he was cut with knife when you punch him.

Sonny jabs TF out of him, but Saint Primo may manage to land something big late, a la Leotis Martin .

Depressingly, this would be an element to factor in.

Primo went 11 rounds against Max Baer, on a broken ankle.
It took near-prime Joe Louis 6 rounds to convince Primo that he couldn't win.
I don't see how 1970 Liston can finish him in 8 rounds. Primo is quick for his size, has a good jab and has enough stamina to go 10+ rounds.
He will survive the first third of the fight, losing the rounds along the way but as Liston begins to tire, Carnera will start amassing points with his left.
I doubt Liston will go the 15 round distance at that stage, he will be exhausted by the 11th and willingly resign.
If he does make it to the 15th he loses a decision.
