There’s been some robberies and hometown officiating, but none I’ve seen quite like this debacle This content is protected
This was diabolical. Amazing Coggi wasn´t stripped, Eder Gonzalez did get a straight rematch on neutral ground. Had Coggi down hard and seemed on the verge of winning again when the crafty Argentinean connected in the third. Though I always liked Coggi (good fighter) I resented his fights over Eder. I do give him credit for coming back in both fights and he can´t be blamed for the awful ref but was glad that Frankie Randall beat him 2-1 in their trilogy. The Columbian lost his next 3 fights via ko and retired. Real shame.
I felt bad for Eder. No matter what happened in the rematch, he deserves to be able to say he was WBA champion for a short while.
Yeah, it didn’t last long enough for Holy’s head to truly start smok’n’. Head butts wise, Holy was a slow starter. Lol.
what the hell did i just watch? do not remember that fight. that ref actively helped that fighter! second round, he was litterally out on his feet and he then stopped the round 25 seconds early?
The Ring wrote a long article about it a few years ago. https://www.ringtv.com/615042-money-****-and-the-left-hand-of-god-the-tale-of-coggi-vs-gonzalez/ Argentina’s had some other bizarre fights. Luis Lazarte not getting DQ’d for the 1st Ulises Solis fight was definitely hometown cooking. Most blatantly dirty performance I’ve ever seen. Even worse than Freddie Norwood against Derrick Gainer. This content is protected Lazarte later threatened the referee’s life in this fight which turned into a riot. I’ve seen one particular moment a hundred times & it will never stop being funny - the instant when Carnera drunkenly staggers across the ring in retreat, & Baer chases him with his right hand cocked behind & above him looking like an old lady with a pot chasing some schoolkid down the street.
Anybody remember the Mayweather fight where he overheard Lampley at ringside make an error (I think while talking about the NFL) & Mayweather corrected him mid-fight? Then Lampley called out & asked him who he thought would win an upcoming game & Mayweather answered him between punches.
I just reviewed Danny “Little Red” Lopez vs. Mike Ayala (1979 Ring Magazine FotY) for the ‘what fights did you watch today’ and had completely forgotten the 11th round: About a minute into the round, Lopez lands two lefts (more shotgun jabs than hooks) right on Ayala’s nose, which is probably broken and had been bleeding for several rounds. Ayala takes a knee. Referee Carlos Padilla counts and Ayala gets up right at or just after 10. Padilla waves it off, ruling that he had reached the 10 count before Mike got up. Cornermen jump into the ring. Ayala walks over to his corner, dejected but not protesting. Lopez’s corner is celebrating. But wait, there’s more (way more). The timekeeper overrules Padilla, saying the ref missed the count by one and thus Ayala was up at nine. The WBC representative rules that the ring be cleared and the fight continue. After everyone is out, Padilla waves them together … and the bell rings to end the round. It seems the timekeeper in all the commotion had lost track of the time and how far into the round they were so he just ended it. From the video, if you take the time before the (reversed) stoppage and the second or two after Padilla restarts it til the bell rings, the round lasts about 1:05. Ayala gets let off the hook but is stopped for real in the 15th. Speaking of timekeeper errors, Greg Page stopped Gerrie Coetzee for the WBA heavyweight title in the fourth minute of the round. The timekeeper lost track and just never rang the bell. Officially it’s a stoppage at 3:03 (the count concluding since a fighter cannot be saved by the bell). Estimates I’ve seen (never timed it myself) say it’s about the 3:40 mark. For reasons never explained afaik, not only did the result stand (officially at 3:03) but there was no rematch ordered and Coetzee didn’t get a shot to correct the outcome with regulation rounds.
