The Hitman was at times as fragile as he was dangerous, but that’s not what this is all about. So let’s skip past guys you think could take advantage of his at-times suspect chin or sometimes unsteady legs. This is about pure boxing ability in a H2H matchup.

Because Thomas was never outboxed by anyone. Not by Ray Leonard, not by Virgil Hill, not by Wilfred Benitez nor Roberto Duran.

    So who could?

Pick your personal choice to beat Hearns over, let’s say 12 rounds, on pure boxing ability alone at:

    Welterweight

    Junior middleweight

    Middleweight

    Super middleweight

    Light heavyweight

Perhaps it’s an easier task at the upper end of the weight scale, but it’s still a small roster who would stand a reasonable chance to do it.

    This could be interesting.

168lbs and 175lbs is tricky because the best boxers would all probably KO Hearns by accident. At 147lbs Griffith and Napoles would have a good time in there - Billy Graham, Gav, Holman, Toney, Burley and Robinson. Pretty selective group of men at about 160lbs and under to outbox Hearns the list of men I’d pick to beat Hearns is probably longer then most. If Hearns was forced to box and not go for the KO I think the other list would also grow.

lol . Hearns was never outboxed by anyone ? thats funny he got his ass KOd in 3 rounds twice, but thats not boxing? SRL took everything Hearns had to give and eventually walked through , closed the distance, and went to the body hurt Tommy then back up at the head ,, but thats not boxing either I guess? SRL Kod him in the 14th and still had the 15 th in his back pocket if he needed it. but going to the body and then back upstairs I guess isnt part of the sport ?? The Hearns never getting outboxed if a laughable myth . when you get your ass Kod , you got outboxed period

Agree on Jones, disagree on Floyd. Too small and light-hitting at 147 and 154

Floyd’s power was never an issue. If he could figure out how to take Hearns’ jab away, he might make him look basic.

I always felt but never heard if Mike Mcallum terrorised Hearns in the gym or not.

Outbox or just win................because I've said multiple times the same thing you said, that it was next to impossible to "outbox" Tommy Hearns.

But I'd say these are the only men who even have a chance at boxing with him

    Welterweight: Ray Robinson

    Junior middleweight: Mike Mccallum

    Middleweight: Michael Nunn

    Super middleweight: James Toney

Light heavyweight: Ezzard Charles, Michael Spinks

There's others I think can out gun him but the question is "outbox". There's precious few men I'd give a chance at doing that.

Yeah I’m not sure. I just thought McCallum might be a possibility.

Outboxing also might be a tricky term. The game to win a round is to hurt and to be effectively aggressive.

They sparred but it wasn't a heavy session. Manny Steward held McCallum in very high regard. At the end of the day, McCallum was a high risk opponent that offered very little fiscal reward for Hearns.

I will go to my grave thinking that McCallum would have beaten Hearns but it is what it. Both were outstanding fighters.

I think if they were to fight McCallum could’ve employed and enjoyed a similar plan to Barkley, take his legs early, leave him stationary and KO him - that is and it’s very likely, Hearns abandons his advantages. Overall I think if you were a boxing trainer you’d want a fighter closer to McCallum then you would Leonard, Benitez, Hearns, Hagler Mike was a great all rounder.

I've always thought he would beat Hearns for two reasons. McCallum's durability and versatility. I think Tommy's only shot would be to out box him for 12 rounds and I just don't see him holding up against those body shots. Look how bad Hearns faded in both fights against Leonard. Leonard was a very good body puncher but McCallum was an atg going downstairs. Tommy would do everything in his power to Keep McCallum on the outside but after eating some straight right hands to the body, I think Hearns goes for broke and tries bang with McCallum which would be a mistake against a counterpuncher like him who truly had an iron chin. McCallum fought til he was 40 years old and was never stopped.
