Was one tough SOB! I've been watching the two fights and just seeing how much damn punishment he soaked up, especially the second fight. Now that Ruddock could have hung in with some of the best of the best imo.
Good morning Fergy. Yes,Ruddock was a very tough and durable opponent who could well have beaten a few of the non-elite heavyweight champions.
I watched them recently & I’d agree with you except he was then knocked flat as a pancake by Lewis immediately afterward, so who can say.
Morning pal. He certainly took some of Tysons best in there mate His face at the end with the broken jaw had me whincing.
It's how you know when people start blabbering about how nobody ever stood up to Tyson and if they did they won, that they just heard it and ran with it, because they don't know anything about anything and don't actually watch anything that isn't a highlight reel.
Ruddock was never alone after this fight, it's easy to check this by watching his next fights, even before Lewis. Lewis was known for taking broken guys into the ring
If he was broken by those fights (& I have my doubts), then he wasn’t all that durable to begin with. They were tough fights, but nothing more. Hardly career-ending. I think you’re short-changing Lewis.
He took a couple of good beatings for sure. I don’t subscribe to the idea that getting beat up well and absorbing those beatings means he’d have been some kind of dominant force if not for those fights or in another era. He was big, strong and he could punch. But he was also a one-trick pony wiht that let hookercut ‘smash’ and overly reliant upon it. Apparently he once had some boxing ability but abandoned his skills and fundamentals and fell in love with that left-hand power shot to the exclusion of all else, which is a limitation it would have been hard to overcome against any top opposition. The Lewis and Morrison fights underscore this.
It should have taken something out. The second is a pretty hard watch because of the brutal beating he takes. Dishing out a fair amount too, though. The fight where Tyson showed the most resilience imo. But stylistically Ruddock wasn't well suited to a rangey puncher like Lewis. Sticking out your arms and pulling back your head can work in a fashion against a shorter fighter, but not one with longer reach.
What absolute nonsense that last sentence is. If you'd been around at the time you'd know that Ruddock was still highly respected when Lewis took him on and the result was a bit of shock. Say what you will in hindsight but the word at the time was definitely not that Lewis feasted on a broken fighter. It was also meant to lead to a shot at Bowe, who then ducked him, so it was the fight to take for Lewis. Also, if Tyson hadn't run from Lewis in '96 they would have met much earlier. That is solely on Tyson. Too bad that Lewis-Holy didn't happen earlier, but I've never heard anyone say that it was Lewis's fault.
Got a feeling this is ironic, but it's actually quite right on. It should be mandatory to have watched this fight before doing the "Tyson was a weak bully" thing.
