Ok, it is clear that he does not have the resume of Ali, Lewis or Joe Louis, but we go in parts.

First big test (Berbick): Tyson demolishes him in 2 rounds to become world heavyweight champion at age 20. Knocking out Berbick, a tough guy, in 2 rounds deserves great credit, at least for me.

1988: Two big wins against Spinks and Holmes. The same Holmes who 4 years later gave a much more competitive fight than everyone believed to a prime E Holyfield.

Spinks? Everyone mentions him as a low-level heavyweight when he beat Holmes at least once and also Gerry Cooney, and that is no joke being a natural light heavyweight. and Tyson knocked him out in 1 round.

Victories against Frank Bruno, Ruddock, tough contenders.

Prime Mike Tyson (86 88) is one of the best face-to-face heavyweights, and as for the resume, for me he deserves a mention at least in the top 15.

Personally I always considered that, at least in his prime, Tyson performed better when he gained opposition. Tony Tucker, James Smith and others gave them some problems, but when he moved up a level (Spinks, Homes), he looked phenomenal.

    What do you think?

I don't know anyone that has him outside the top 15. Outside the top ten would be a stretch as well. I think he's rated fairly.

Occasionally you'll see a YouTube video of some clueless people looking at a highlight reel of his KO's and they'll mention him as "better than Ali" which is patent nonsense. But for people that actually know a bit about it, he's ranked pretty fairly, maybe anywhere from 7-10.

The public is a pretty huge term is n't it? Some rate him too low, some too high.

You just called the Holmes fight a big win. That's all there is too say about this strawman of a thread.

Mike has a good resume, but there definitely are circumstances to his rise.

Personally for me the Spinks Holmes wins are not a big deal to me for reasons that have been brought up befor.

Well it doesn’t help that his résumé isn’t great - made more pronounced in nature that he appeared to be a much better fighter than his final record suggests.

If you’re like me & you disregard ‘Who Beats Who?’ when judging fighter rankings, Tyson struggles to get himself inside the top 10 of all-time Heavy champs. That’s very disappointing for how lethal he was.

Tyson's resume from the 80's may be a little underrated. He faced every top contedner there was (except for Whiterspoon) and cleaned out the division. You can only beat who's in front of you. His resume from the 90's however, is extremely overrated. He didn't beat no one of significance after he got out of jail. Overall, his body of work can be considered Top 10, but I wouldn't blame you if you said it wasn't even Top 15.

I guess it's because of the second part of Mike Tyson's career.

Apart from the fact that in the first part of his career, apart from the victory over Holmes, there are not so many big names. Behind Holmes are Spinks and Bruno.
But no one ranks Mike Tyson outside the Top 15.

I concur. What if Joe Louis had to fight Tysons title opposition? Yeah, Louis wins and by knockout in some, but Louis would struggle, especially against movers like Tony Tucker. He probably would KO Spinks, but it probably would be late rounds and Spinks would look competitive in the meantime and he certainly hit hard enough to bother Louis. There's a good chance Louis could get clipped against Bruno, he did against Buddy Baer.

Prime Ali would likely beat all of Tysons title opposition, but he wouldn't look as spectacular as Tyson did. For example, he beats Berbick, but the fight goes the distance and Ali wins a decision.

Good post. The killer IMO is that the 80’s is only the first third of Tyson’s career. He completely blows his legacy thereafter. Two-thirds of anyone’s time in the ring is a big chunk.

Ali & Louis would have distinguished themselves with sustained longevity, whereas Tyson did not.

They don’t. Tyson is one of the most overrated fighters in history when it comes to public opinion

What I'm saying is that if you put them up against the guys Tyson fought for the title, they wouldn't look as impressive. But they would win and Louis would KO some of them

Best wins are drug addicts, fat ****s, fat **** drug addtics, old guys, and mediocrities.

It's not terrible but it is lower end of top ten.
