There are people on this forum who would have laughed at Tony Galento beating Ngannou

I laugh at Galento every time I see him on film.

Rough customer for sure and he did have some power in that hook, but he makes Butterbean look like a classicist.

 

What's a realistic chance? Like from 0% to 100% what do you think the odds of Baer winning are?

I’ve never understood the disrespect Two Ton Tony gets from us non fighters. Tua is a force of nature according to many here… yet I’d say there silhouette’s would be hard to distinguish. Everything else besides his appearance (that is his career and the film) would tell you Tony was a natural born scrapper who became a boxer.
Tony was a bull terrier and an honest pro with nothing to be ashamed of. TG is no dancing bear he was a successful contender who would have felled Francis like a tree. It isn’t pretty but neither is the boxing business.

 

The fight was great! However I can see similar skill after 1 o clock at the local bar when the drunkies slug it out in the car park.over a glass of stale beer.

I'd say the 1984 version.

 

Both Galento and to an extent Baer relied on physical attributes and rudimentary skills to succeed. No point in judging them because they did not try to succeed in a manner you find appealing. You could actually make a case for Max ocassionally boxing well, but he was inconsisted, mentally scarred, and nearing the end of his career when he got in the ring with Tony if I remember correctly.

Needless to say no matter how unappealing one find them, some fundamental boxing concepts were there, even if they weren't as aesthetic as neophites would like them to be.
