‘Does he really have to keep proving himself’: Lampley talks about Canelo not facing Benavidez

The thing is his most controversial cards have been draws at the best, its not like he’s getting clearly beat and winning 8-4 on the cards. Lara was very negative, trout was close but the KD did it. GGG could have gone either way and I personally had it GGG but its not a robbery.

 

Is there any fight at 168 you think he’d lose? He’s falling into the Pac/Floyd catefory where your favorite no matter who you fight.

 

Canelo has done alot already in the sport of boxing, fought all of Boxings scariest boogeymen, Trout, Lara, GGG, had a fight scheduled with Paul Williams, fought Mayweather, Cotto, Bivol, Saunders, Kovalev ect. He's got a great resume where he can walk away if he wants to, but if he doesn't fight Benevidez In my opinion, it hurts his legacy.

I think Benevidez is the last of the Boogeymen and I think he needs that fight to silence his critics and stamp his name in the history books as one of the best fighters to ever come out of Mexico. Maybe the best.

 

When you are holding the belts it doesn't matter that you already proved yourself, you have to continue doing so if you want to keep them, or at least that's the way it should be.

 

Should be but it's not.

Canelo will be retired in a couple of years. He's just raking in the dough now. He's going to minimize risk and try to maximize profit.

He's made so much money for boxing that he'll be allowed to do it.

His popularity and name recognition are such that he'll continue filling arenas and selling PPVs no matter who he fights.

Maybe it's not right in a true sporting sense but it's the reality.

 

I'm not justifying anything. I'm just pointing out the truth. There was absolutely not as much "desperation" or chatter about these other fights that took much longer to come to fruition. Hell maybe all those fights combined don't have this level of cry. I've also been a fan of boxing long enough to know we don't always get what we want when we want, so I'm just being realistic. At some point the fight will happen and it will be on his time. Either he'll knock Benavidez back to being a prospect and prove you guys wrong or he'll lose and prove you guys right. Then boxing will move on like it always does. Modern sports fans are so impatient.

 

And he's been his Mando for 1. Benavidez wasn't even worth the fight 3 years ago. He was not disciplined, had a **** resume(And to be quite honest 3 years later his resume improved marginally in my eyes, at least he fought a former champ I guess) and is barely able to sell 60k fights 3 years later. The hunt for the savior of haters has been a long one i tell ya.

 

lmao at Trout and Lara being boogeymen. Lara was 19-1-2 when Canelo fought him. Cotto at 35 and war torn should have been a showcase fight, and Bivol , Kova were cherry picks. He has only ever fought one bogeyman and that was GGG. Saunders was nothing at 168.

 

GGG wanted no part of Lara, I rest my case.

No, other guys are ahead of him.

 

Of course there was, and rightly so. There's much more demand for Usyk v Fury and Beterbiev v Bivol than there is for Canelo v Benavidez as they're much bigger fights. Opetai v Breidis has been demanded less but the cruiser division never has the same luster for some reason.

There's no need for you to be realistic as you put it. No need whatsoever. There's also no notion of impatience by modern fans.

It's wanting to see the champion fight his best contender. Whilst Canelo is champion we want to see him fight his best contender. And if he fights and beats Benavidez we will again want to see him fight his best contender.

I get you're a huge Canelo fan so you don't care who he fights, but there's no reason for you to get so emotional about people wanting him to fight the best.
