Mike Tyson had a better career than Larry Holmes.

Holmes avoided risks. That’s one of the main points of this thread.

There are major, major weaknesses you can point out in both careers, but I have to go with the guy who showed a lot more staying power. That was Holmes.

There’s an awful lot to look at here.

But when did Holmes avoid risks?

    In general?

    In his prime?

    When?

This is not an absolute matter. Holmes should get partial credit insofar as he didn’t duck anyone. However, he clearly avoided everyone who gave him a hard fight thereafter, there’s a pattern. & I’m quite confident Shavers would have been added to his no-return zone had he scored that brutal knockdown in their first fight rather than their second.

He didn't. Just like Tyson Larry beat all the top guys of his era or the guys who beat those guys. The difference was, Mike's time on top was 2x shorter. If we consider being the true lineal champion even 3x shorter.

Yeah, me personally I have Holmes as number 3 in all time heavyweight rankings (closer to number 4 than number 2 tho) and Mike as number 9.

    1. Men who Holmes did not fight:
Dokes was Ring annual number 4, 3, and 1 for 80--82.
    Coetzee was 8 in 78, 3, in 79, 5 in 80 and 81, 1 in 83, and 5/6 in 84/86.
Tate was second only to Holmes in 79
84 and 85 belonged to Pink, number 1 in each year.
    Page was 2 in 83 and 84, and 5 in 85

    2. Other than Williams, who was denied his owed rematch against Holmes, every man Tyson beat during his title run in the 80s either won a heavyweight title or Olympic Gold. That's 9 men.

Holmes, during his title run, only beat 6men who won a heavyweight title and/or Olympic Gold in a boxing ring. Tyson, coincidentally, beat two of those men when they were champions and a third was a Parkinsonian, Thyrolar riddled Ali, which doesn't count for much.

Very close to me, I have Holmes #3 (a million miles from the top 2 & could easily see him at #4 behind Lewis too) & Tyson at 10 (there's nothing to choose between my 8-11, imo).

Yeah, I can see Holmes being number 4 behind Lewis, it's a toss up tbh. Tyson may as well be behind Wlad as well.

    Fair enough for me.
I also have Tyson a a fringe Top 10 and Holmes as Top 3 but way below Ali and Louis.

I think you already tried these BS arguments and failed miserably, so I'm not even gonna respond, as I would just repeat the stuff you already know but can't comprehend. Waste of time.

To be fair neither of those guys impresses me like a major risk for Good Old Larry.

Tate, Page, Coetzee and Dokes were high ranked no doubt, but the Fab 4 they weren't per sure.

And he beat the guys who beat these guys. I mean Holmes beat Weaver and Snipes who beat Coetzee, beat Weaver and Berbick who beat Tate and beat Berbick, Whiterspoon and Bey who beat Page. Michael Dokes fight could have never materialized due to Don King protecting him and Pinklon Thomas wasn't even in the top 5 until 1984. This was said multiple times on this thread, but the dude is just delusional throughout.
