Tate couldn’t take it. He had all the other tools but against Foreman if you can’t take a punch it makes everything else moot.
I don’t understand that. Watch Weaver vs Tate and then Foreman vs Lyle and tell me who can take it better.
The guy who got off the floor to win the fight could obviously take it better than the guy who was brutally KO'd.
Lyle had Foreman fighting for dear life in a 3rder…(Was it 3?) Weaver KO’d Tate after a hard 15. Foreman was “Brutally KO’d” by Muhammad Ali in half the time and he was also probably half the puncher Weaver was. I think the above at the least says they’re comparably durable IMO It shouldn’t be strange or weird to suggest it at all, it might be controversial to you but these kind of blind dismissals ruin the forum (to me) and have become common. A party line if you will, a bunch of absolutes in fantasy. I don’t even think Tate will win I’m trying to create discussion. maybe my tone seemed mean spirited, I have a history, it also sounded a bit too dismissive itself, it wasn’t meant to be and you’ll have to be pardon me if it suits you.
Young Foreman is a mismatch for Tate who is fragile if you can pressure him and bang him big. He'd go after the big man, corner him, and rap him. KO3. Old Foreman would have to work a lot harder as Tate was a big man and extremely good boxer. I'd expect Foreman to be behind on points when his sudden opportunity opened up and he left Tate prone. Tate would be a bit more cautious than he was against the unknown 21-9 Weaver. When he did attack Tate could be pretty gettable and it would be one of these moments when the BOOM would drop.
If Tate and Foreman could fight, at their best, Weaver (Tate did well in that one) and earlier for Tate, and whenever was the best Foreman (who knows? His reputation was made on 2 two round blow outs), I'd bet on Tate. He was bigger, faster, and a better boxer than Foreman and most importantly, he could do 12-15 rounds. Foreman would be in the fight for the first 3 rounds and had a "puncher's chance." GF tired and weakened early and his chances would drop more in rounds 4-6. After 6, Tate would just beat up the fatigued GF. Tate fought big punchers like Mercado, Knoetze, and Coetzee and won. He lost to Mike Weaver by a late knockout. Weaver is a good fundamental boxer who kept his power the entire fight and he had good stamina. Nothing like 70s Foreman. Tate was a good boxer, can't see him getting caught by GF early and Tate had plenty of offense to get GF's respect. He was a solid puncher and GF was stunned often by Jimmy Young. Tate is much bigger and stronger than Young, he could stop GF at any time, early is possible, but late is probable.
