Erik Morales switching to southpaw in the last round of his first fight with Manny is a pretty memorable one for me. This content is protected
The first thing that comes to mind lol William Joppy keeping his hands near his hips while in Felix Trinidad’s range wasn’t exactly the brightest idea This content is protected
How about Lenny Lapaglia, who was dropped on 3 separate occasions after dropping his hands and letting Art Jimmerson tee off on him... This content is protected
Hagler coming out righty against SRL. If it didnt work the first round, why the hell come out righty in the 2nd Hearns not knowing how to hold , clinch, stay away , all of it against SRL. Notice how he did it in the rematch when rocked
Hagler coming out orthodox vs. Leonard and fighting the early rounds with the intent of proving he could outbox Ray wasn’t brilliant. That guy who kept wanting to kiss and hug FMJ after head-butting him wasn’t exactly a genius. Any fighter who has his wits but doesn’t throw back any punches or do anything to indicate he’s OK after being hurt while his opponent tees off with impunity … only to protest that he’s just fine after the ref (who cannot read his mind) stops the fight — don’t even get me started. But very few people reject admission to Ivy League schools to become boxers, so expectations should be tempered.
Ken Norton electing to box safe in the 15th round of the Ali rubber. Ken didn’t need the round imo, the fight should’ve already been in the bag on the scorecards of fair judges. However, when, in all the rounds they boxed before, did Ali every really hurt Ken let alone have him on the verge of KD/KO? Strange election on Norton’s part but he didn’t deserve to lose based on his inexplicable decision not to fight more aggressively in the final stanza.
We just saw a great example of this in the Joshua fight. Francis switching to southpaw halfway through the first round because he was not effective before that. Fatal mistake against an opportunist. Hands low and wide. What a big opening he was leaving for a straight right hand. And Joshua delivered. He never saw the punch. I had Joshua in 3 rounds----but after that debacle it was not going to last that long with that defense and ringsmarts against a guy like Anthony Joshua.
Terry Norris getting DQ’ed not once but twice in fights with Luis Santana. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…
