Burley defeated the great Archie, although I believe it was at middleweight. Say Burley was a challenger to the middleweight crown during Hagler's reign. Does he overthrow Hagler?

Charley gives Marvin a good fight but would lose over the distance be it 12 or 15.

If Charley Burley had all the ability of his times then he’d have beaten Hagler.

I think Burleys win can be a little undersold. Archie had been mixing it up with Bandit Romero the Houge brothers, Eddie Booker, Aaron Wade and Jack Chase. He was throughly educated he had over 60 fights and I imagine he was a much larger man than Burley.

So you think he's a greater H2H middleweight than Hagler?

I see what you're getting at, but Moore seemed to be a better fighter at light heavyweight and heavyweight

I think he would win if they fought, yes.

I’d need to see the film if it exists but at this time I’d agree with you.

So Burley would take over Hagler's middleweight kingdom???

True, but he was still a great fighter during that period as well. Moore beat Jack Chase 3x before fighting Burley, and beat Lloyd Marshall the following year.

To say Fighter A would ‘take over’ Fighter B’s kingdom (by which I presume you mean become a champ as dominant as Fighter B was) is not a reasonable projection. Boxing is full of examples where a great man loses to a merely very good one, and the very good one doesn’t become as great as the man he dethroned.

Styles make fights, for one thing, and while we might have a fair measure of Burley’s level and abilities from his resume and what those who saw him fight had to say, we don’t I think have any way of figuring if his style would be troublesome to Marvin or vice versa.

And even if he were to best Marvin, we don’t know that he’d take Hearns’ power and fury the way Marvin did, or for that matter if he’d be outmuscled by a Hamsho or who along the way might be made to beat him even if Charlie was better than Marvin H2H.

Ken Norton beat Ali (some say two or even three times) but I don’t think many would argue that he could have accomplished all Ali did, cleaning out the division twice and all that — or even that he’d necessarily beat Sonny Liston … certainly not Foreman and maybe not Frazier.

Hagler barely edged a past-prime Roberto Duran by decision. Most-if-not-all of Hagler's signature victories are against non-middleweights its pretty difficult for me to give him the nod over the best-of-the-best of that weight class even though I like him very much.
