Hello! We had a little bit of confusion last time, in the Middleweight Chin Tier List, so I'll try to lay this out as clearly as possible.

This is not about the best punchers at 175lbs - it's about the best ATG light-heavyweights and organising them into a tier list for punching ability; however, I'm not after your own tier list right now, or a top ten, or anything else. What we'll do is, review the punching ability of each of the Top 30/40 (depending on how it goes) fighters in the division, organising them from best punchers to least punchers.

The Tier list is specifically about 175lbs but it's ok to look elsewhere for clues as to how hard a man might have hit at 175lbs, so it's reasonable to take some knowledge on Michael Moorer, for example, his KO ratio at heavyweight and relating that back to 175lbs. This does lead to questions about punching power freed from the constraints of weight-making but it's all about applying your own learning to the list.

What we'll hopefully end up with is a top to tail 175lb puncher's list, considering the most established Light-Heavyweights in history in relation to one another.

I'll list the fighters 1-3 at a time, and you guys can say where you think they ought to rank on the 175lbs puncher's list, by the tiers i'll lay out below.

    You're judging the fighter's power at 175lbs, not in a p4p sense.
If you don't think any of the tiers fit the fighter, just go for the one you feel is nearest.
Hopefully say a bit about why they belong where you think they belong.
Yes, ranked fighters who already have a tier continue to be open for persuasive, detailed discussion.
The numbers associated with the fighter are just for me so I can keep track.
    Thanks!

I'll go with "Puncher" for Matthew Saad Muhammad.

8 stoppages in 9 championship wins with over 70 percent KO ratio overall, I wouldn't quite say hes up there with the likes of Bob Foster regarding power who I would have in the "Gun" category.

But I think "Puncher" for Matthew Saad Muhammad is the perfect category for him he has good/very good power but not scary power.

I'm going with puncher. He stopped a lot of quality guys and could clearly put the hurt on people, but he isn't constantly dropping people like flies, so he falls short of becoming a proper gunman.

Puncher. Top tier for me is the Spinks/Foster type, who routinely take opponents out with one shot. Saad broke you down. He could certainly crack, but physical strength and pushing through and showing indomitable will took his opponents out of their game. The right hand finished the matter.

Three-pronged agreement out of the gate, and you can make that four - we'll leave him open all Sunday though to see if there's any meaningful disagreement.

    So what about Tommy Gibbons?

Tommy tends to be underrated - I note that he has a higher KO% than Matthew despite spending a fair bit of time at Heavy (boxrec gets a bit weird about NWS). 56-4-1 with 48 ko victories - where does he sit?

    Tommy's key LHW names:

    KO6 Kid Norfolk
    LUD15 Harry Greb
    D10/WPTS Billy Miske
    WPTS Battlink Levinsky

Inferior opposition go knocked about a bit, but he wasn't folding any deckchairs above a certain level, let's say.

I foresee only a handful finding there way into the 'Gun' category, and Muhammad and Gibbons are perhaps as close as you can reach without quite collecting the tag.

The category of 'Puncher' is assigned to both, for mine.

    Hi Buddy.
You make a good and valid point, about foreseeing only a handful of LHWs being labeled " Gun " in fact I am not sure we will agree on 5 , Saad / Gibbons in the punchers is where I think they should be, but the anomaly being Saad poleaxed Mwalle with a scything uppercut, and at some stage we will be discussing where to put Charles, I am thinking he also will be in the " puncher " category, but I'm sure you all have seen him render Satterfield uncouncus with a single left hook, so as the esteemed @salsanchezfan has already said Spinks/Foster are obvs for the " Gun " who down the ages of LHWs can we see joining them, not many I would profor, but am avidly following @McGrain in his labour of love, and thank him for the amount of time and input he routinely puts in his posts.
    stay safe MM, chat soon.

    Extremely hard

    One punch kos of

    - Richie Kates (right hand) - Kates didn't go down but was staggered badly by the punch
    - Lottie Mwale (left uppercut) - the referee could have counted to a 100
    - Pete McIntyre (right hand) - Pete got up but was in no condition to continue
    - Jerry Martin (right hand) - Martin didn't go down but dropped his hands to his side and was clearly out on his feet

    - Louis Pergaud (hybrid left hook/uppercut) - Similar to Mwale the ref. could have counted to a 100.

Two punch KO of Murray Sutherland (right hand followed by a jab for good measure) - Murray got up and protested what he felt was a fast count by aged ref. Paul Venti.

Twice stopped Marvin Johnson once out cold the second time he got up but was in no condition to continue. Both times the finishing blow was a left uppercut. A single right hand badly staggered Johnson a the end of the seventh round and the bell saved him from a probable knockout. Of course Marvin took a lot of punches before being stopped.

    - Floored Eddie Gregory (Mustafa Muhammad). One of a handful of times Mustafa was ever knocked down. It was a right hand and Eddie was not badly hurt. Eddie had an iron chin and was knocked down by a right hand by Michael Spinks he could not see because of a closed eye. He got up from the Spinks knockdown and continued unhurt, as well.
