I think sluggers are defined by their power rather than volume of punches.

I think the “slugger beats the swarmer” formula is usually correct IF the fighters are of equal level. But when one fighter is a class above the other, it doesn’t really play out like that.

While Baer was somewhat unorthodox, I would still class him as a slugger of sorts, but not the textbook definition of a slugger. Marciano was a swarmer. This gives Baer certain advantages. In this case. I'll still go with Marciano, but it's a tough fight for him.

I agree. On their best nights, Baer wins. Problem is, Baer's best nights were far and few, unlike Marciano who always stayed in condition.

I don’t think this is close.
Marciano kills him, either wide UD or second half stoppage.

A slugger prioritizes power, offense, and often output over conventional boxing technique.

They aim to hit first, and if they have you in trouble, they go caveman on you.

    I agree.

Baer's preparation for the Carnera fight was not irreproachable.

I think that Rocky would decision him, but why should I expect him to stop Baer? It's highly unlikely...

I don't know about mauling him but i give the edge to Baer. He would be by far the hardest puncher Marciano would have faced.

    Marciano mid late KO.
It would be even worse beating than he took against Joe Louis.

    Dangerous fight for both.
Rocky gets the KO after a wild brawl in which they both hit the deck.

To begin with, I rank Rocky Marciano higher on my all time list than Max Baer.

Head to head: Because of the styles involved here, If I can have the Max Baer from the Max Schmeling fight against the Rocky Marciano of the Joe Louis fight, I am going with Max Baer. If I have to take the Max Baer from the Primo Carnera fight, I am not as sure, however I would still lean Max Baer, but not with much confidence. If I get the Max Baer from the James J. Braddock fight, I lean Rocky Marciano. If I get the Max Baer from the Joe Louis fight, I am going with Rocky Marciano, without hesitation.

I was thinking the same thing. Baer was out of control fighting Primo. His rage was more focused against Schmeling. He would need that focus if he fought the Rock. He might've been the foil that Marciano never encountered, to the frustration of many of us.
