We are talking about Dempsey from 1919. The Dempsey that fought Firpo and the one that fought Willard were pretty different fighters.

Patterson didn't really have much in terms of foot speed, was an overprotected fighter and was petrified of Liston, no comparison.

    Hi Buddy.
I agree a Dempsey win isn't out of the question but unlikely, lest we forget Carpentier rocked Jack to his boots with a slightly high straight right, Jack himself is on record as saying that had the punch landed a little lower on his jaw, he would have been in real trouble, I can see a real brawl for a couple of rounds or so, but feel that Liston's size and all round strength would be too much for the smaller Dempsey to overcome.
    stay safe Jake, chat soon.

As long as the Mob or Nation of Islam isn’t involved Liston by KO inside of 6 rounds

Either might win this this one.

There is no question Dempsey would rather fight Sonny than Tunney, and Sonny would rather fight Dempsey than Ali.
They'll have a solid target to land their bombs on, a good honest slugfest where anything goes.
Punches will be flying, at long range it will be Liston's jab, up closer it will be both Dempsey and Liston.
When Dempsey gets past the jab he'll be in close, as Sonny's heavy feet didn't allow him to move backwards fast enough to keep Dempsey at a desired range.
Jack isn't Patterson, he didn't caresse your back in clinches, he tried to maul you using any advantage he could get.

It would be a fight between two killers.

Liston's jab will stifle Dempsey's attack and lead to his KO win., besides walking to Sonny throwing bombs isn't a recipe for success.

Did Dempsey fight a puncher with Liston type power? Liston fought Cleveland Williams, who perhaps wasn't the overall fighter Dempsey was, but had similar punching power.

Liston KO eventually but Dempsey would wade right out there and sling some leather that Sonny would feel. This actually would be hellaciously entertaining.

I love Dempsey and truly feel he had the skills to have been an exceptional fighter but I don't like the style of any cruiserweight swarmer against a prime Liston , I just don't ...

I’ve read Liston was least dangerous on the inside from sparring partners. You were best off smothering his power close and fighting it out there on the inside. If that’s at all true Dempsey should be favoured it’s just I’d just like to have seen it put to the test as I never saw Liston fighting anyone inside.

My vote is for Jack Dempsey he was a very versatile attacker who was good at stopping the right I think they could build a plan to let the jab come make shallow contact and they’d counter the right if it followed, I say this because from what I’ve seen he seemed most susceptible to the straight right and eager to throw his own.

I feel and people of the times felt as if Liston could fight in straight lines so getting inside after the right would be a natural thing. I’d say it’s a 60-40 fight and it’d depend on whose distance they fought it out at and if Sonny could lock Jack up quickly enough once he got inside.

To make it absolute fail safe, Jersey Joe Walcott isn’t allowed to ref and Nat Fleischer isn’t allowed within a 10 mile radius of the stadium. :D

Liston by brutal KO in 3-4. People are really overestimating Dempsey. He beat washed-up, limited oaf Willard. He had been knocked out in a round previously by journeyman Fireman Flynn. He didn't face any of the top black fighters (McVea, Wills) in his era. Who did he really beat? Definitely no one on Liston's level. He's too small & his aggressive style is tailor-made for Liston.
