I mean I don't think either side think it was a hip shot. If his belly button was a bullseye that's the mark and a legal mark through history and time.
Wrong. Although, not directly on the hip, the shot is at the level of the hip. Hip shots are illegal. The belly button is usually at the level of the top of the hip. That's why that shot is considered low. As I mentioned numerous times, take the shot you posted and rotate it to the side of Usyk and you get a hip shot.
Belly button is above the hipline. Beltline should be on the hipline but tends to be higher & covers the belly button like on Usyk. Most top class refs will indicate the legal line at on the belt physically marking it with their hand pre bout if the trunks are high. It's simple did it hit his belly or lower nearer the groin. It hit the belly which has been legal since the days that Jesus Christ himself ruled the HW division.
I don't think it was legal. But it's not a good look that way he reacted to it. Ultimately he was able to knock Dubois out which removed the questions about him.
Bottom line (And I can’t believe there are still dorks out there that don’t get this) the ref gave the pre-fight instructions and POINTED right at Usyk’s and Dubois belt lines and said “This right here will be low!” So… IT WAS A LOW BLOW!! End of. And yes it very much was in fact low because it hit the top of Usyk’s cup. Those ARE ILLEGAL SHOTS. Does… does that register or….
How paid off and inept was the referee? Very is the answer. Usyk's "cup" is was high like his shorts. It hit his bellybutton which by all standards has been legal since the dawn of time. You cannot watch any great fights with bodyshots taking centre stage without this punch being involved on that location. Just google Mayweather body jab. A classic first one that comes to mind. Technically is was “low” because it was on the belt but in reality it was not “low”, it was not a dick shot. If the punch had connected on the same place in a kickboxing or MMA fight it would have been legal.
Body shots exactly like this one are given as legal, all the time. Regardless of whether this particular shot was low or not, Usyk got very lucky that night, because another referee may very well have given it as legal, and no one (but Usyk’s most diehard fanboys) would have batted an eyelid.
