Losses mean NOTHING

You are correct, losses mean a lot less these days. It's so easy to get screwed over for a start. Decades back losses hurt a fighters career more, in my opinion.

 

Unfortunately promoters still believe that the 0 is the most marketable part of a fighter.

 

It's good to have, no doubt!

 

Boxing is moving back to a place where losses no longer hurt.

A 0 is still used as false marketing but everyone can see in almost every circumstance it just means the fighter has avoided a legitimate challenge.

 

Selectively. It would be nice if that were the case for everyone.

 

I can't think of anyone recently who lost for the first time and it significantly hurt their career

 

Some guys fight squids and fishes in The Bahamas and Back Streets of Mexico and have to pay off corrupt people to get their W's. The real men of the sport are the one's who fight with honor and integrity and don't duck anyone.

Loma and Tszyu are the holy men of Boxing. And a few others.

 

It was a solid fight with high drama. If Tim were a precious risk averse "protect the 0" fighter we would never got an exciting match.

"significantly" is the key word. Sure, it sets most boxers back a bit, but a few quick wins overturns that result.

Boxers need to realize that being active is more important than losses. Especially if you are a prizefighter before athlete, and most are in it for the prize.
Kiko Martinez is THE best example of this.

He sets himself as a clear European level contender who has mixed results. He then ends up running into Carl Frampton who absolutely destroys him. What does he do? He has a quick turnaround, gets an easy W and it puts him in the perfect spot because a title shot comes knocking. He only got the title shot because he was active and at the right place.
Martinez takes full advantage and pulls of an excellent upset. A few quick title defenses later he runs into Frampton again, only to loose his belt to him. Less than a year later Quigg mops the floor with him in two rounds.
What does Martinez do? He has 3 quick fighting in 4 months and is rewarded with a title shot vs Leo Santa Cruz.
Cruz of course beats him with ease.

And this trend repeats itself several times. He looses a fight, takes easy tuneups and gets right back into big fights, eventually winning another world title.

 

Losses mean the most to the fanboys that elevate or denigrate the fighter with or without them IMO

Absolutely. You fight you win you fight you lose, but you keep going anyway.

Fans don't care about a 0.

 

Most casuals had no idea Manny had lost fights before Marquez KTFO him.
Heck, many even thought both Manny and Floyd were undefeated when they faced each other.

Joshua has turned his career around in just a year. Some British news site actually wrote an article about how he should retire after the second Usyk loss. Now they are glamoring for his next fight.
