Both had 9 successful defences in a row. Whose reign was better? Lets compare them in chronological order. Who beats who: Smith vs Akinwande Thomas vs Golota Tucker vs Briggs Biggs vs Mavrovic Holmes vs Holy 1 Tubbs vs Holy 2 Spinks vs Grant Bruno vs Botha C. Williams vs Tua
Smith/Akinwande = Not much to choose between them Akinwande was 32-0 but against modest oppositon, whilst Bonecrusher was coming off a big win vs Witherspoon although Witherspoon was fat and didn't really turn up. Both fighters put up a pathetic display it's a toss up honestly. Thomas/Golota = Another fairly close one Golota was coming off two DQ losses, but he'd battered Bowe all around the ring twice. I'd probably give the edge to Thomas as he actually won a belt and up until Berbick fight went undefeated for 7 years. Tucker/Briggs = Tucker clearly for me. Biggs/Mavrovic = Mavrovic was a European champion ? Biggs was an Olympic gold medalist. Both were fairly unproven at the upper echelon level but both were undefeated. A fairly close one but I'll give the edge to Biggs. Holmes/Holyfield = Holyfield clearly he was rated number 1 Heavyweight for like 3 years, Holmes was 38 coming off a lay off and 2 losses. Tubbs/Holyfield 2 = Again clearly Holyfield for same reasons above. Bruno/Botha = I'll give the edge to Bruno as I think with his power, height, reach, hes a more dangerous challenger. Tua/Williams = Tua clearly for me only 1 closs loss at that time to Ibeabuchi. Tua was number 1 contender I believe ? A dangerous KO artist has to be Tua.
The destruction of Golota and Spinx is quite similar. Even the duration is similar. Total - Lewis. Last chance, for now, to see the undisputed champion.
It's very close. Tyson has a bit more depth with better fighters but Lewis has the Holyfield fights and possibly the bigger punchers. What's more impressive: slaying the talented boxers or outboxing the powerpunchers?
Lennox's greatness comes from the fact no one got an unavenged loss on him and he beat Holyfield and Tyson. His competition is not noticeably better than Tyson. Bowe, Moorer and old Foreman aren't there. But that is not the selling point of his resume. Criticism of Tysons resume comes more from the fact he lost against the best guys he fought and the idea that if he'd fought better opponents earlier they would have beaten him too. Its not about his resume being "bad". Lewis doesn't have this problem and if Tyson had beaten Holyfield and Lewis he wouldn't have this problem either.
In chronological order I have it for Tyson in a near sweep. Save for Tua. what’s crazy is this made me realize how dominant Wlad was as he made as many defenses as these two guys have combined
Mike, but remember, Lewis had 3 reigns. First as a paper (or how you guys would call it today e-mail) champion and then as a 2x major/lineal/undisputed champion. So I would give these 9 title defences to Mike, but overall reign to The Lion.
Any win by Tyson on points is more impressive than any win by Lewis on points given Tyson's height and reach disadvantages. I mean, a champ with an 84in reach and a good jab ought to be outboxing guys. A dude with the height/reach of a middleweight? More impressive.
The problem is that Lewis never self destructed or spend years of his prime in jail so the comparison is flawed. After jail Tyson fought on pure talent, no dedication, disrespecting the sport, poor training with yes man ,mentally checked out and just going for the big checks. In retrospect, a farce. In the last ten years Tyson turned it around and he knows he faakked up . I am convinced deeo inside he regrets his waste of talent
Tyson's advantage is the fact that he did not have such embarrassing defeats in swim prime as Lewis. McCall and Rahman were no match for Douglas and the Tokyo fight was much better than Lewis's. Moreover, Tyson dominated his rivals and Lewis had terrible problems with the likes of Mercer, Holy II, and Klitschko. His wins over Briggs, Akinwande or Mavrović were not impressive. In general, the more I delve into Lennox's career, the more doubts I have, she looks better on paper than she did in reality, in the ring
