Could Tszyu and his team have called the fight after the 4th round?

The only similar situation that jumps to mind immediately is Hopkins-Dawson I, which was originally ruled a TKO win for Dawson, and later changed to a NC.

Harold Lederman said this after the bout (per BoxRec)

HBO Commentator Harold Lederman appeared live after the bout, and stated that the rules in California within four rounds call for a no-decision (or no-contest) when a bout ends for a reason other than a punch, explaining referee Pat Russell could not award a TKO by the rules of the California State Athletic Commission, noting a TKO did not apply in this circumstance.

An intelligent team should have had foresight and called the fight then, as in a whisper in the ear.

Tim’s corner were grossly negligent in their duty of care to the fighter.

I hope he sacks every single one of them.

They should have educated Tim in the moment about what was unfolding before his eyes.

The Dr approached and asked Tim if he could see - the Dr saw fit to ask that question in order to assess Tim and the continuance of the fight pivoted on Tim’s answer.

Had Tim answered no (= can’t see) then the Dr likely stops the fight based on that answer - that isn’t the same as Tim surrendering or his own corner stopping the fight.

Rummy...can you think of any fight where a cut ON TOP OF THE HEAD was stopped by a Doctor?
I have not seen the fight, so this is a general question. Personally I've never seen a fight stopped by a ringside Dr due to a head cut. If the fighter claims he can't see then it would be up to the discretion of the Dr and in that case I can see a stoppage.

A loss is not the be all and end all, and TBH I think it's a better look for Tszyu to have fought through the cut and fall just short, giving the fans a great show in the process. It probably would have done his reputation more harm if he pushed for a NC after the cut.

The team definitely dropped the ball. They are supposed to know all of these things and it was clear from the moment the cut happened that the fight should have been stopped.

Inexperience and hubris cost Tzyu his title.

No, if it happens before 4 rounds it’s a NC, if it happens after it goes to the score cards.
If a foul happens and the Dr decides to let it go but the fighter doesn’t want to it’s a chance they will rule it as a loss.

If he said that when it happened (round 2) they would have ruled it a NC because it was before 4 rounds. They go to the score cards after 4 rounds.

    Who says?

Is that an official rule or are you speaking out of your arse?

I don’t know, hence the reason I’m asking.

He is part Russian and his uncle speaking Russian stopping is not an option. Nah, i thought that he could have stopped but he wanted his first fight in Vegas to be memorable and didn’t wanna disappoint the audience.Fair play to Tszyu might have won more fans. But mostly because Russian are old school with real warrior mentality.

    It’s political though.

Could and should his team have stopped the fight due to an accidental elbow which occurred in the second round at the end of the fourth round?
