Quarry experienced quite a considerable amount of scucess against punchers like Shavers and Lyle, how does Baer do against him?
I think Quarry is a terrible matchup for Baer. Jerry thrived against limited, big punchers like Max. Jerry counters Max all fight, and, wins a unanimous decision.
He had his Qualities. A solid chin, immense power and the ability to go fifteen rounds. But if we’re going to deny that he had limitations then we might as well ad the name “ sugar” in front of Deontay Wilder’s name.
I agree. Quarry had plenty going for him. Good counterpuncher, terrific body puncher, loose as a goose, had plenty of power, reasonably quick hands, one of the better left hooks in the business and fearless, macho, defiant, liked to mix it up. He might've been the model for the Billy Tully character in "Fat City"' but don't quote me. He was tragic. So promising as a youngster. In my mind I could hear him saying that line spoken by Tully, "All I need's a fight and a woman. Then I'm set. I get the fight I'll get the money. I get the money I'll get the woman. There's some women that love you for yourself, but that don't last long."
Agreed, Baer did beat Max Schmeling I believe, so he's capable of winning but as others have already mentioned it;s a fight where Quarry has a stylistic advantage.
Hmmm. Maybe, maybe not. I give Quarry good odds to beat any version of Baer. But it’s a debatable fight with the best Baer out there, yes. I’d still take Quarry in top form, though.
That’s not out in the ozone. I just think Quarry is sometimes overrated and Baer sometimes underrated here. Baer had all the tools, he just didn’t have the brain God gave a nematode or the heart and desire and dedication of the ATGs.
