Jimmy Ellis vs Henry Cooper in Sept 1969, WBA Title. This fight was supposed to happen but negotiations broke down as Ellis was to meet 5 state champion Joe Frazier on Feb 16 1970. Who would have won this title fight ?

I hate to go with the obvious, but I’ll take Ellis on cuts.

Jimmy could mix it up with all but the elite and could also box ears off as needed. I think he’d hit ‘Enery enough and cleanly enough to get to that scar tissue.

Cooper’s always got that left hook bomb cocked and ready to go off, but I don’t think he lands a game-changer here. Even if it goes to points, outside of the possible squirrelly Brit stoppage or Brit decision if it’s in the UK … gotta go with Jimmy here.

Have to favor Ellis, unless Cooper lands that big left hook, Jimmy either outboxes him to a decision or stops him on cuts.

Wasn’t this the bout where the BBB of C refused to allow Cooper to contest this title because they didn’t recognize the WBA or something like that? In protest he turned in his Lonsdale belts. They did the same with Brian London when he was scheduled for Patterson but he went through with it anyway. I agree with London. This was for the world title. Chances like that didn’t come around too often when there was one world champion. I would hardly miss that opportunity because a bunch of stodgy old men said I couldn’t.

Jimmy Ellis. Even if the Ellis that boxed so badly against Patterson showed up he´d win on points or cuts as mentioned by other posters.

If the Ellis who dropped Bonavena twice and landed repeatedly on Leotis Martin showed up then Cooper´s dodgy chin might fail him before his eyebrows did.

That's true, but Cooper was going to go ahead with the fight anyway. Sadly he developed cartilege trouble in his right knee which caused the fight to be first postponed and then cancelled.

Ellis would win I think. More than likely by the old cut s or ko.

Gotta go with Ellis. He was on a hot streak. Henry was still winning fights but he was at the end of his rope.
