This clown brings up Mac Foster as the guy "who beat the crap out of Williams," neglecting to mention Williams was old and shot (literally) against Foster.

We need to teach the clown that he needs to think before posting.

Quarry without any doubt. Big Cat made to order for Jerry´s superb counter punching skills, combinations and body work. Cleveland would do well to last till the 5th.

Oh no, Liston paroles again...a win is a win and it does count.
Williams did nothing even before shot, and that is for a reason while Foster did.
I'm glad he beat the crap out of him so you butthurt crybaby could yell around when I bring that.

I'm going to go against the grain here and pick Williams. Two bouts that are seldom mentioned that I think would be extremely pertinent to this match-up are Williams-Machen, and Chuvalo-Quarry.

Everyone is saying Quarry had this significant style advantage. Well Machen also seemed to enjoy a somewhat similar style advantage. He was also an excellent counter puncher but also significantly slick and had a much better defense than Quarry who with all due respect, had virtually none to speak of. Instead Machen was hurt several times, nearly dropped, and garnered a MD, with two judges going for a draw, and the third judge going for Williams by a clear margin.

That same Machen (well no actually a shot Machen on his last legs) went on to make an undefeated (albeit admittedly green) Quarry look like an amateur four years later.

Chuvalo was on his last legs, and seemed to fit the profile of guys Quarry liked to feast on, slow, clumsy, etc but he knocked Quarry out. Alex Fiteff faired much better against a better version of Chuvalo (as did a shot Williams tbh) who needed two hometown gifts against Miteff. He garnered a draw in the first fight with the most blatant hometown ****ery I've ever seen. In the last round, he dropped Miteff ONCE yet instead of being given a two point round, one judge gave him a 3 point round, while the other two judges gave him a four point round which is absolutely absurd and the only time I've seen this. Even so, Miteff was so ahead by this point, that Chuvalo could only garner a draw.

In the rematch, Chuvalo (again in his hometown) won a split decision by HALF a point. Here's how Miteff faired in his very next fight against Williams.

"Cleveland (Big Cat) Williams, who shattered the title hopes of 7th ranked Alex Miteff with a 5th round TKO, set up a howl today for a shot at champion Floyd Patterson. If Williams ever looked as though he deserved a shot at the title, it was Tuesday night. He took command of the fight from Miteff from the start, opened a bad cut over his left eye in the 2nd, floored him for eight counts in the 3rd and 4th, and was beating him badly when referee Ernie Taylor mercifully ended it 1:32 deep into the 5th."

My point in all this? Williams was demonstrably a much better fighter than Chuvalo in their primes, let alone the shot version who knocked out a prime Quarry. Does this mean Williams wins for sure? Of course not, but all these posts saying Quarry wins without question are non-sense.

Yes, Quarry beat Lyle, Shavers (a very impressive win mind you), and Foster. But Williams unlike these other punchers, would've enjoyed a significant hand speed advantage over Quarry which could potentially be very detrimental to Quarry's counterpunching tactics. Quarry had no defense to speak of which is why he was shot at 27. Williams was also had superior boxing skills to all three of these guys.

Yes I can see the arguments for Quarry. He has a much better resume, and he seems to have a styles advantage on paper.

But he also lost to worse fighters than Williams in his prime, was very vulnerable to cuts, had zero defense to speak of, and was dropped by Joe Alexander of all people. And while Quarry does have a better resume, I also don't see doing any better or even as good, against Williams' best opponents in his prime; Liston, Terrell and Machen.

Terrell would keep Quarry on the outside all night with his jab and hugging for a decision or a TKO on cuts.

Quarry already lost horribly to Machen, and while he was green, Machen was much further from his prime. I don't see Quarry having better luck with both at their best. I certainly don't see him garnering a draw like Williams did. No need to go into depth with Liston for obvious reasons.

Now does this mean Williams wins for certain? No. It's anyone's game. Either guy could take it, but I'm backing Williams to pull off the upset.

The site child will accuse you of liking a parolee like Williams even though he must mean Liston, what can you expect from a runny nose child who tries to be a man, but lacks manhood, Ha Ha.

He went 15 rounds with Ali, somethin Liston and Williams could never achieve.
He beat Thad Spencer, knocked Williams twice, knocked O'Halloran and Folley in first round and knocked Billy Joiner...better resume than Williams could only dream about with his poor resume.

100% in agreement with this analysis--well stated. (However, I think it would go about 7-8 rounds before Quarry finishes him either by stoppage or KO.)

Ali was in the worst shape of his career up to that point and clearly had no incentive to finish Foster which he had multiple oppurtunities to do.
Spencer hadn't won a fight in two years.

Williams was literally shot and was 36 and 37 in those fights.

Joiner lost more than he won. I have no idea why you brought him up.

O'Halloran just wasn't very good truth be told.

Folley was shot and at the tail end of his career.

How many of these opponents were ranked when he fought them? I'll give you a hint. It's less than one.
