Excellent post Pat! And yeah you do make a good point regarding Quarry's inability to adjust. He got away with it against Lyle, but it proved to be his undoing against the likes of Ali, and Frazier.

His defense was virtually non-existant which is why his brain was basically mush before he reached 30. Even in fights he won, like the aforementioned Lyle bout and even against Shavers he took some serious punishment.

 

I agree. Best and most objective post in this thread.

 

The style and heart that made Quarry so popular with boxing fans during his career IMO contributed to him winding up as a shell of a human being. I started to say that his defense was of the Rocky Balboa ilk.

Jerry Quarry would’ve worked Cleveland Williams over it was just his sort of fighter, I can’t see it any other way. Jerry Quarry really was a model contender he just went looking for everybody 9 wins over top ten ranked fighters.

 

I literally said it can go either way, and told Pat, who picked Quarry that he had the best post in the thread.

By the way, you never answered the question I asked you in the other thread. Can you name all these top tenners Mac Foster beat?

Yeah he beat the ranked Randy Neumann and Eduardo Coletti. Yes that’s a cheap shot, he had his moments and was a tough, game, crowd pleaser but he was nowhere as good as people here think he was, although you will note that I picked him in this matchup. He might get in the low echelon of the top 50.

And I found the thread where people thought he had a chance against prime young Foreman and his comments where he thought George was ducking him.

He should have counted his blessings that George ducked him because he could have gotten hurt very badly and quite possibly ruined before he actually was.

Quarry would have got in some good licks on Foreman, but he would have ultimately been bludgeoned. Although, I can see why people would pick Quarry, because he was a counter puncher that could deal with sluggers.

 

George Foreman himself actually stated Jerry Quarry was the only man he consciously avoided. I believe George Foreman turned away a larger purse to fight Ken Norton? instead when it would’ve been the best purse of both of there careers at the time. folks who saw there sparring in 1969? stated Quarry handled him. I don’t know how the bout would’ve went between him and George Foreman I favour ”Irish” but those are events on the timeline. I don’t believe he was “great” in the sense of a Joe Louis but I do believe he was very good pro @ronnyrains might be able to tell us more on this but that’s my recollection of the knowledge at my disposal.

 

Jerry Quarry was probably at his absolute peak in 1969. Foreman was a neophyte in 1969. He was a lot better in 1973. We can agree to disagree but I don’t think Quarry would have had a thing for George in his championship days. I will absolutely concede that Quarry was a “very good pro.”

 

Great stuff Swag. You beat me to a few points I was going to make for Williams.
Love Quarry and he should take it if both were at their best. But Quarry had some major defensive liabilities and he cut easily. Those issues could be serious against prime Williams who hit like a mack truck, and as you noted had quick hands.
Williams also could fight behind his jab , certainly better than Shavers and Lyle, Quarry had issues with fighters that jabbed well.
So yeah Quarry should win. But I wouldn't bet a mortgage payment on it lol.

 

Quarry is to tight and educated for mine. He can get underrated and has both skill and power tho his power is seldom ever talked about. Williams with the usual punchers chance but Quarry didn't lack vs power.
