It's obvious and funny to see Hearn deflecting all his attention towards Shalom and Boxxer in his recent flurry of interviews. "I can't talk about Benn for legal reasons, but never mind that Shalom doesn't want to put his 21 year old novice in against my fighter boo hoo"
It's to be expected - it appears Matchrooms default mindset mode is 'we are the victim, its always someone else's fault'
Just goes to show that working with Frank in Saudi is purely a money thing and hasn't stopped him trying to put down other promoters and play the victim card at every opportunity
Hearn goes on about his critics living in their mums basements yet his head office is in the spare room of his dads gaff
Of course I agree, that's what should happen. I am wary however that there will be some trepidation amongst the board as costs rise. Do they cave if someone offers a face saving compromise, or stick it out?
In fairness, I was doomscrolling last night and saw a bit of an interview, Boxing Social I think, where Hearn forgets himself and fleetingly mentions that Benn could have handled it better. Can't remember the exact wording but it wasn't exactly a resounding endorsement. Edit:
I think the board come out of this looking good regardless to be honest. Hearn was sure he could strong-arm them and brush it all under the carpet on some garbage pretext like he did with Whyte. The one thing that has been made clear to absolutely everyone, is that Benn is not innocent and that's why he hasn't been fighting in the UK. Even if the ban is backdated he'll forever be the omelette man or the guy trying to get pregnant - in other words the guy who made all the excuses that nobody believed. And the best part is that they were all own-goals by Benn and his team, not the board, they were just the guys who thankfully said they're not buying it.
Hearn will have done a wedge putting on two non events in the US. Benn will have done millions in legal bills and "EXPERTS" So even if the board did backdate it they've won. In the meantime, boxing has picked up hugely. Before Benn vs Eubank was one of the few shows in town. No it's drowned by other fights. It's still a big fight but it's peak moment has passed.
We'll know if it's a "big fight" if the Saudis offer to underwrite it. I wouldn't hold my breath over that.
I see Benn has posted an image today for "Boots vs Ennis". https://x.com/MichaelBensonn/status/1777317451828490411
That's Benn vs Ennis not Boots vs Ennis. But the next big announcement regarding Benn is unlikely to involve a fight.
