The potential was there with Williams. If he had gone to a gym in 50s Philly or NYC when he was starting his career, CW might have dominated the era. That he could compete well with the top fighters of the 60s while lacking great fundamentals says a lot about the guy's physical talent. He was a big, fast guy with the potential to be better.
I remember watching Frazier - Bonavena and thinking, if Bonavena had been trained in Philly and Frazier had been trained in Argentina, I'd bet the farm on Bonavena. Sometimes a potentially great fighter just doesn't have access to good teaching when he starts fighting. The good fundamentals utilizing good body mechanics/balance/weight shifts can make the difference all through a fighter's career.
There have been arguments about CW vs. Patterson in the early 60s, but give CW a top NY trainer and let Patterson start off in a small town in Ga. and there probably would be no argument.

Again do your research. He listed Dejohn and Foreman as the hardest punchers he'd ever faced but said a shot Williams was also among the hardest punchers he'd ever faced.

I just went back and watched the Norton-Quarry fight for the first time in ages. Hell of a fight. And I understand why Quarry is so beloved, he had the textbook definition of a crowd-pleasing style, he kept coming and coming and coming and coming and throwing leather, and Norton knew he’d been in a war. But I stand by my assessment of his skills and his status all time. And seeing him lead with his head made me wince. He was a warrior. Sometimes being a warrior is costly.

Who knocked out more rated contenders Ali or Shavers?

How about between Norton and Lyle?
You see where I'm going with this?

By the way I've asked you three times now, and have yet to recieve a response. You put a lot of stock in wins over rated contenders when it comes to H2H matchups, and punching power.

It seems to be quite literally your sole reasoning when it comes to picking a winner between two guys are determining who hit harder.

You stated Foster would've beaten a prime Williams. Where are these abundance of top tenners Foster beat?
Yes. Because the success of the majority of the golden gloves well translated real when on the professional level. As seen in the cases of well renowned fighters. like Albert Wilson, Ronald Draper, Michael Arms, etc who are household names to this day.

Lie, there is article The best I faced and there is no mention of Cleveland Williams.
He rated DeJohn and Foreman as hardest punchers.

Cleveland Williams wasn't that good. A lot of people mentioning him lately, I don't get it.

Not to take anything away from Jerry but Shavers was pretty ordinary in that fight. He got in one good right hand and that was it.

Whether you project a win or loss for Big Cat, I think he at least matches up better in terms of style, size and dimensions (height and reach).

Also, remember from Satterfield until the Liston fights, Cleve wasn’t knocked out. Post Liston, Williams was also not knocked right up until the shooting.

I think people are anticipating prime Cleve folding far more easily than would actually be the case.

This isn’t a paid for announcement (the promised monies never arrive from Swag anyway), it’s actually my own opinion. :D

Ah, you finally moved away from repeating that quoted definition, over and over and over....

Was it a bad vinyl record or did you get your stylus needle fixed?

Repetition of “paroles” is still a problem though.

Do you happen to be familiar with the word “pariah” and its meaning?

Excellent post. Like I said I can see either man winning but this "Williams has no chance" stuff is just non-sense. I guarantee you had Chuvalo-Quarry not happened, not a single person would've picked Chuvalo.

Machen also would've universally been picked to wipe the floor with Williams.

Speaking of, @JohnThomas1, took my money and assured me, he'd make such a good case for Williams that everyone would favor even a gunshot Williams over Quarry than he turns around and stabs me in the back.

Except of defending your friends can you bring any argument about Quarry vs Williams or would continue to defend Williams because you're fan of almighty Liston and his believers?
I hope you and your friend who is now having anger issues and is arguing everyone who picks anyone over Liston and Williams would find a peace in your minds.
I knew that this post would make you and swag go crazy and I'm happy about it.

Frazier doesn't belong in that group. I don't think he'd be miles behind Frazier to be honest. He'd only be a leve down, some might argue half a level. Fraziers power can at times be undersold in here but like Quarry he's not a genuine one punch banger.
