Sitting here watching the Mercer vs Lewis fight. Mercer gave Lewis hell. If that Mercer ran into Tyson in 1987-88, what would happen?

Tyson just outworks him, but Mercer's chin, stamina and power keep him competitive.

If I remember correctly, given Mercer's advanced age coming out of the Olympics, they wanted to have him up and ready in 18 months to fight Tyson. Mercer started struggling a bit more than they had hoped as he got to the Kimmul Odum, Bert Cooper level--not in danger of losing, but he couldn't quite get guys out of there. It didn't matter, though, because Tyson lost to Douglas about a year after Mercer started.

Despite being durable with a tremendous chin Mercer would have no choice but to brawl with Tyson ring center. I see this being a seesaw battle of sorts until Tyson's class soon shows and wears him down by eating Mercer's ribs for dinner!

Mercer's style is not easy for Tyson. Strong, durable, able to get into the punch, get into the action, go inside, I don't know if I'm understanding correctly here, but they clearly see Mercer, who is difficult for Mike in terms of style. He is almost as good as Holy 1996. But if we are talking about prime Tyson, he will always be a little faster, a little more brilliant, more versatile, more surprising, with an equally tough or maybe tougher chin, with the fitness to last 12 full rounds. I think that brave Mercer will fall in rounds 6-8. Mercer focused on defense will lose by a high percentage of points. In normal circumstances, out of 10 fights, Mike wins all of them because he has everything to do it.

But Tyson wouldn't have a hard time landing as Mercer would be right there

Would be a very interesting fight imo. I always wanted to see him fight Mercer back in the day.

Mercer totally packs it in and goes on survival mode. He possibly exits the fight in some strange manner like pretending to get knocked out or rising at 9.9 and complaining when the fight gets waved off.

Is there really anything there that makes him more difficult than Bonecrusher Smith or Tucker? Smith had just laid out Weaver and Witherspoon and was at least Mercer's equal on strength and durability, with probably a little more power. Tucker was just better than Mercer and also had a great chin.

It depends which Ray turns up.
He could be hard headed and tough as hell. I really think he could have given Tyson an hard fight.
But a prime Tyson, I don't see Ray actually having enough to win.

Prime Tyson wins on points in a hard fought contest. Tysons speed and combinations would be the difference between them. Ray would make it a tough fight .Tyson liked to intimidate opponents! this isn't going to work on Mercer .He was a nutter in the ring when in the the right mood and genuinely feared no one ! He would laugh in Mike's face if he started that cobblers ! Post prison Tyson stands a good chance of being beaten by Ray .

Prime Tyson by UD like against Bonecrusher smith.
Post prison Tyson would be same fight like Holyfield Tyson or Mercer Morrison.
Tyson would gas himself out and Mercer would wear him down.

Mercer didn't even log any serious wins after Tyson came back from prison.

Yeah but did better against Holyfield and Lewis.
After prison and late 90s, Mercer would kill him.

Bonecrusher did not come to fight. If Mercer comes to fight and is on his game this would be a tough tough fight for Tyson. And yes that’s prime Tyson. He didn’t fair well against adversity. Let’s see how he handles getting hit and Mercer laughing at his shots. Tyson is gonna get frustrated real fast. Yes you can say he did well against Razor but that was post Douglas. Interesting fight if Mercer shows up to fight
