Unification for the WBA and WBC heavyweight titles. Could Superman Roy Jones have beaten Lennox had they fought In 2003? Or was Roy just too damn small?
Lennox would've saw what was in front of him and just ran Roy completely over. He'd have no fear of anything incoming, Roy can't possibly win on the outside as Lennox was a phenomenal out-boxer and imagine Roy trying his luck on the inside...................there's no scenario that Roy wins this.............
This would have lasted however long it took Lewis to get a clean right hand in, which might not have been immediately, but it would have been inevitable. Roy knew better than to even try this.
Roy would look great until the first time Lewis landed a right, at which point they'd be calling an ambulance.
It's important to add context here ... Roy was on top of the world, an all time career high in terms of how his talent was percieved. This was before he went back down in weight and became half the fighter he had once been. There was certainly no discussion of him ever being chinny at this point. However. Roy was smart. He cherry picked Ruiz because he knew he'd be able to beat him. And he didn't cherry pick Lewis for a reason ... He was too big and too good. Jones knew that - in fact I don't think he ever mentioned Lewis at all. Even downplayed the idea in the post fight interview.
Jones Jr. Took a calculated risk against Ruiz. He knew Ruiz wasn't that talented, that powerful, and most importantly ( For Jones) very aggressive. And that risk was worth it for him because Ruiz did exactly what Jones Jr. needed him to do for him to win. Most aggressive natural heavyweights in history with some power beat Jones Jr. And I'm not talking about the greats, but fighters like Lyle, Shavers, Baer, Quarry, Cooney, Cooper, Mercer , Morrison etc. They wouldn't give the much smaller Jones Jr. The space to work. They'd know to take it to the smaller man until something substantial lands. And it probably would be the end of the fight when it did. Jones Jr knew it would be his best option to challenge Ruiz. and not remain at heavyweight. The stars aligned for him perfectly. Because if Lennox Lewis had he been in the opposite corner instead of Ruiz he would be facing a murder charge. Jones Jr. was smart enough to know his limitations. ( Clint Eastwood from the movie Magnum Force) And didn't go beyond them. Though in retrospect. Gaining and then losing the weight suddenly turned out to be the end of his career anyway. Or should've been been because he wasn't the same after.
This is almost the post that I was about to write. There was plenty of interest in the fight when it was mooted. I do remember reading one interview from Jones between teh Tyson and Klitschko fights. He gave his top three heavyweights in teh world as: 1. Roy Jones (obviously) 2. Evander Holyfield 3. Lennox Lewis He went on to say that he had been in touch with Lewis about a fight, but that Lewis had told him that he was thinking of hanging up his gloves. After it became apparent that the fight wouldn't happen, talk turned to a Jones Tyson match. In the end Jones went down in weight to fight Tarver, and the rest is history. Not quite. After Tarver beat Jones, there was even talk of Tyson Tarver.
