    Maybe the most recent one.

Schmeling is the superior boxer. But this could end up being another Max Baer situation. I don't rule out either scenario.

Unless Foreman is stricken by an act of god en route to the ring Max is getting brutally KO’d within 4

Max stuck around with Baer for 8 and Louis for 12.
He had good legs, distance manipulation skills and knew how to back up well.
If Foreman gets him, it's in his top two wins on his resume and the best counter puncher he'll have ever beaten, to put it into perspective.

Max is a great fighter but I rate Frazier and Norton both ahead of him, also Foreman has good wins over Moorer and Lyle as well as a strong performance against Holyfield while in his forties

The best fighters who Max beat came back and returned the favour emphatically so it’s hard too rate him too highly

I've never understood this myself. I know Old Fogey said it was an off night for Schmeling rather than Baer being any good. I'd be very interested in @janitor 's take.

I actually think that Baer's lack of orthodox technique might have helped him here.

Schmeling's style was based upon countering boxers, and by being technically correct, you almost introduced an element of predictability.

Like you I am a little surprised that Baer beat Schmeling, but we accept the evidence of our eyes.

He was a far better boxer than Jimmy Young and we all know what Young did to Foreman.
If Foreman wins it'll be because Max got caught.

Excellent take. I've always felt a similar way when it came to Foreman-Frazier, in that Foreman's relative lack of hand speed compared to past victims like Ali and Ellis actually helped him here, as when Frazier would slip Foreman's punches and return to position, Foreman's punches would still be coming and nail Frazier, or his gloves would still be close to Frazier, which would disrupt his rhythm greatly and leave him more open to being manhandled.

Please, people using the first Louis fight as their reference point…take a look at what happened in the rematch.

There is no version of Foreman that gets blasted like that by anybody.

Foreman beats Schmeling so badly that it isn’t even a credible contest.

Now take a look again at what happened in the first fight. Nothing will erase that.

Schmeling ain’t knocking Foreman out and he sure as hell ain’t surviving 15 rounds.

Schmeling is a 100/1 shot. At best.
