Tyson may not have been like '88 Tyson by then but he was still a very powerful pressure fighter and was still knocking everyone out inside a round or so.

I certainly don't see Willard going three rounds with Tyson let alone the distance.

Ruddock went the distance with Tyson. Dempsey isn't knocking him out in a round.

    A 1926 Dempsey. Probably.

I doubt Firpo would even be around long enough to land a significant blow vs. Lewis. If he did manage to land clean however, I'm not sure what that would look like. I suspect that Lewis, even not having the greatest chin, takes it without too many problems. I've only seen Firpo vs. Dempsey, and bits and pieces of his fight with Willard, so it's hard to assess exactly how powerful he was.

I realize that size isn't the end-all in discussions like these, but fighters <190, especially with Dempsey's style, aren't the types who are likely capable of rising top of the Heavyweight division these days, and haven't been for a long time the way I see it. Whether Dempsey was an exception, who knows? He fought in an era where most of his significant opponents were what amounted to white-only Light-Heavyweights or Cruiserweights. I thought Willard was sort of a big stiff who was lucky enough to catch an end of the line Jack Johnson. Firpo had the technique of Mark Gastineau. It's really hard to tell with his resume exactly how good Dempsey was.

I don't believe anybody Dempsey fought has power anywhere close to Ruddock's. These posts claiming Dempsey would smoke Ruddock early remind me of some of those outrageous Chuck Norris memes. Ruddock landing that left and stopping him would be VERY possible IMO.

I don’t know what you’re basing Ruddock being dramatically better than Firpo on…

I think my favorite was that Ruddock goes the same way as Willard, only he doesn't last as long.

I'd love to see this fight take place in Dempsey s day, in fact Ruddock taking Firpo s place.
Let's be honest, we could see either man battered unconscious very early!

There are loads of times where the smaller man especially at heavyweight beats the bigger man.
    Ali
    Frazier
    Holy field
    Holmes
    Joe louis
    Etc
Beat loads of the huge h3avyweighta of the 21st century too good and big enough to do damage to anyone

Yes Jack dempsey was a great fighter, fought 15 rounders, stamina better than many, tough as nails, punched hard, a great fighter. But we have to remember he is a small cruiserweight so imagine we are talking about someone coming along in the 90s or 2000s at cruiserweight who could possibly fight at light heavy going in with ruddock at 230 lbs.
And we aren't talking about a usyk style style who could nullify a guy like ruddock we are talking about a man who will trade all night long.
Does beterbiev beat a 210 guy who can fight and punch? No
This fight for me could be interesting but If it was coming in tonight I'd have to favour ruddock to take some punches and stop dempsey.

We have to start thinking of these guys who were between 185 and 200 lbs and small cruiserweights and yes marciano and dempsey arguably beat most cruiserweight ever and still a lot of small heavyweights and maybe some below par massive heavyweights but at there weight they struggle to beat any top 15 of any era 225 + guys.
Even when we talk about a guy like usyk as a good example of a quality smaller man beating massive guys, he still has to box and do his all to keep them off of him and he is actually a proper 25 pounds naturally bigger than marciano and dempsey. He is still for any era a proper heavyweight really. He would have been a fairly big heavyweight in the 70s

Well, would Team Dempsey even allow this fight to happen if it were back in those days? There's reason to believe Ruddock doesn't even get a shot at him. I'd prefer to see Dempsey in Ruddock's era where the type of color line controversy with Wills wouldn't have been a thing. The competition for Dempsey would look a whole lot different in the 90s era Heavyweight division...

To your point though, it would have been interesting if they fought under the rules of being able to hover over a fallen opponent, and being able to tee off the instant they made it to their feet.

    Good post mate.
Yes that's why I'd love it to been in Dempsey era.
Something about that time whee the rules were more relaxed so to say.
Guys getting knocked down multiple times!!
