Willard? Perhaps Spinks doesn't batter him like Dempsey did, but he soundly outboxes him, Perhaps stopping him in a manner like how he did Cooney.

    Carpentier? Spinks gets him

    Bill Brenan? Not beating Spinks

Billy Miske? What do you think?

    Tommy Gibbons? Spinks humbles him

Firpo? Spinks makes him look oafish

Tunney is the only one who gives Spinks a fight and he isn't sure to beat Spinks. Even if Spinks came in at 175.

I wouldn't think there would be a question.

Tunney-Spinks would be an all-time great ****. Gene was a stunning boxer.

Spinks vs Tunney and Gibbons would be wonderful fights. I'd pick Spinks in both but no money is going down.

Being favorite over them, and beating them all over a few years, are two very different things.

Personally I doubt that he gets past Willard.

I can see two sides of this for sure. A ways back someone posted Liston vs five or six guys, & I said something similar. On his best day he should beat all, but that’s a different thing to defeating them in detail over a few years.

If Spinks is going back to 1919, which the thread possibly implies, Spinks will be facing Willard in considerable heat, & he’ll certainly have to do the whole twelve rounds because he can’t hurt Willard, much less stop him. The conditions of the day don’t lend themselves to a Spinks win, though he certainly would have, at minimum, a very good chance.

Gibbons? That’s another debatable one. I don’t pick any Spinks to beat Tunney, especially if he’s arriving over the hill & possibly sick as Dempsey did initially.

In any case, if the point of the thread is to show Dempsey’s title reign was not particularly impressive, I agree. If it’s to argue Dempsey was short of being a great fighter, I’d have to challenge that.

Spinks probably or at least very possibly beats everyone in Tyson’s title reign 88-90, too for what it’s worth.

Bruno and Douglas would be dangerous fights for him.

You don’t believe that the same 37 year old Willard who was inactive for three years who Dempsey beat is a beatable opponent for Spinks ?

    Interesting post.

I think Spinks beats Willard one way or another, and without any problems. Your assessment of Spink-Firpo would probably be pretty spot on. Same with Carpentier & Brennan.

Spinks-Tunney? This would have been interesting. Hard to visualize how this one might have went. Somehow I think Tunney on his bike might have been his best bet. I suppose Spinks would be favored, but not by much.

Would have to take a closer look at Gibbons before even trying to guess.

Not at all familiar with Miske. Can't find any footage of him.

You are underestimating Gibbons and Miske.

Tunney has wins over the supposed P4P GOAT of boxing.
