Ryan got defensive about people criticizing his shoulder roll but it seems obvious there were holes in it. Is he going to try it against Devin? This content is protected
Only Floyd executes the shoulder roll to perfection because all of these wannabe copying clown younger generation don't seem to acknowledge and respect that it starts with the feet, everything in boxing starts with the feet. James Toney was only static behind his shoulder roll only because he was a tough stubborn man who enjoyed finding holes to counter into. Ignoring the fact he was ahead defensively of the majority of offence any of his opponents could output Maidana Broner remains the classic. What an idiot. Bet Ryan will let Haney jab his body all night long and he'll shake his head for some weird reason like it isn't a scoring shot.
There hasn't really been a truly competent practitioner since Toney & Mayweather, just varying degrees of flawed.
It's honestly tiresome seeing these wannabes trying so hard to copy the shoulder roll because they believe that it automatically makes them good defenders when in reality it does nothing to improve their style and they just look stupid attempting it.
Exactly. You have to drill it like crazy to apply it effectively during a real fight, and even then some people are just never going to be able to do it and shouldn't bother. If you're someone whose athletic gifts and style lend themselves well to attempting it, an experienced coach worth their salt will let you know. If you're not, an experienced coach worth their salt will let you know.
Maybe a bit offtopic, but imho De La Hoya's philly-shell is very underrated. It was not aesthetic, but it was extremely effective. I say it because everybody mentions Toney and Mayweather when talking about this subject, but few people realize how good De La Hoya's philly was. Regarding Ryan, I honestly don't care. He doesnt belong to the same conversation or the same ring as the other fighters mentioned in this thread. And he will never belong, there are levels in boxing and Ryan is several levels below all of them.
True but he's the same generation as them more or less. He debuted after both Mayweather and Toney but they've both fought more recently than Guzmán.
Not to derail the discussion, but last time I was actually in Subway their meat offerings seemed mostly to be variations in the vein of "Solidified protein gunk, poultry flavour", "Solidified protein gunk, shades of beef" etc. Don't want to know what's in their meatballs but I fear the clue might be in the name.
The funny part is Ryan has the ref save him when he gets hit in the back. If you turn and your back gets punched thats on the defender IMO. That's the "A" list treatment where the onus transfers to the puncher...as if you can even stop it/want to stop it at that point
De La Hoya's shoulder roll was kind of a little trivia gem of that era, haha. His right hand was noticeably improved during that era also.
His technique was a hideous “booty Roll” But Ryan’s version of it did help him to stop getting hit so flush & slowed Duarte’s pressure, thus allowing Ryan to ultimately time & stop Duarte. so in the end it was effective, all be it ugly & disgraceful.
