I read an article where Tony Galento called the 70s fighters bums

Can't find the article now, but Galento said "where do they dig these guys up"? He called Patterson a stiff and said that the fighters were so much better in his day.

If King Kong wore boxing gloves Tony Galento would call him a bum. He played a good heel but he really could be quite nasty.

I guess Tony thought the 70s fighters were bummier bums than the guys he called bums in his own day - Tony of course also called Joe Louis a bum.

Him saying his era was better than the 60s(hes talking Floyd Patterson) is reasonable tbh. But like I've said in other Galento threads I do not believe he as an individual deserves credit for fighting in the 30s. His best win should have been a DQ not just from the fight but from the sport. He was a dirty fighter who makes other dirty fighters look like saints by comparison.

He even called Joe a bum after Louis knocked him out. So, a grain of salt.

Yep, that was Tony’s schtick. If he didn’t you call a bum then that’s when you might’ve actually felt insulted. :D

Max Baer had actually figured out a reason why Tony did this

I totally agree with you about Galento. He's got to be the biggest knob in the history of the sport, hands-down...outside of the criminal types like Resto anyway. I wish this dude was around in the 70s, and could have been matched with some of these "bums". How about Foreman?

Having seen this guy flailing wildly at Baer for 8 rounds, looking like Butterbean with patches of hair, and then reading this thread title is almost unreal.

I don't find Galento the least bit endearing or funny. I don't think Max Baer or Lou Nova did, either. Guys who use their thumbs in the ring like Galento did deserve no forgiveness.

Was it normal for Lou Costello to be doing post-fight interviews back then?

I had to look twice to make sure it wasn’t old, time travelling Marciano.

Who's to say he doesn't flatten Foreman?
