For all his shortcomings, Jorge Luis Gonzalez had a pretty mean punch - How would he do now?

Always found Gonzalez to be an interesting heavyweight. What were his biggest shortcomings? The general laziness, yo yo'ing weight, too many amateur fights, a poor chin, or a porous defense? All of the above? What DID he have going for him, besides size and power?

He seemed to struggle against men his own size & weight. While Gonzalez obviously wasn't ever going to be a fixture in the top ten time I do think he was more talented then some of the men he lost to, like the MD he dropped to a 315 pound Paea Wolfgramm.

Biggest shortcomings - probably his arrogance and overwhelming ego. His refusal to be trained or accept the need to learn and gain real experience in order to advance in the pro-ranks.

There’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance and he crossed it.

He wore the black hat and boxing, like all sports, needs villains to root against. So I’ll give him his props for filling that role (even though he seemed all too willing).

I would enjoy seeing an entirely new generation of heavyweights kicking his fanny, haha.

I hated the way Gonzalez treated Renaldo Snipes.

He punished him for 10 before finishing him, could have got rid of him earlier if he wanted but the brave but completedly shopworn Renaldo wouldn´t give up.

    Horrible spectacule.

Really enjoyed watching Bowe punish Gonzalez.

I liked JLG - he was a great pantomime villian and had all the tools to achieve alot more than he did but as stated above his unwillingness to take advice and learn the pro game eventually ruined him.

Good size, good power and a decent chin - he took a lot of big shots from Bowe and Spoon but after those fights his chin was cracked and i think his desire too. Always struggled with durable sorts as the loss to Puritty showed but did regroup slightly and had a decent run against albeit 2nd tier fighters like Rodolfo Marin, Tommy Martin and faded guys in Alex Stewart and Greg Page, which got him mentioned for a few moments as an opponent for Mike Tyson. Unfortunately, any ground he had gained was lost when he got clattered by Cliff Couser.

A huge waste of talent, with only himself to blame. He was a colourful addition to the 90s HW scene tho........

Am I wrong in thinking that Gonzalez at his best would spank Tommy Morrison's ass most of the time?

Gonzalez was a top amateur but never developed into a great pro. Riddick Bowe pummeled him very badly, in one of Bowe's best performances ever. I think Riddick was highly motivated for that one, because he had struggled with Gonzalez in the amateurs, so he got into top shape. Gonzalez never was the same after that.

I don't think it's a stretch to say the Bowe fights changed Holyfield as well.

Yes I agree I hated Gonzalez for that it was so satisfying seeing Witherspoon and Bowe poleaxe him.

Gonzalez looked terrible as a pro. Stiff legs, open chin and no defense against a right hand. Whatever he possessed as an amateur didn’t translate to well to the top tier of the pro game.

Spot on! I think he could have been something special. But just a horrible attitude.

He had no defense for overhand right hands. In the ams, I guess he could just wing it with the headgear, short fights, and emphasis on punches landed over meaningful punches landed. He’d never beat Bowe, but he might as well have been straight out of the ams for the Witherspoon fight.
