15 rounds at 160lbs. Emile Griffith can be the 147lbs version if you think he’d do better. Both guys for different reasons could spoil a good fight. On one end Emile Griffith was overall a technically very good boxer who was competent at everything but a little risk averse and then there is the “Utah Cyclone” who was strong an schizophrenic with his style, jerky and odd paced like a manual driven by a learner.
I'm leaning towards Fulmer. He did beat Ray Robinson and he would a handful for any welterweight venturing north.
Griffith was strong for a welterweight but I doubt he was strong enough for Fullmer. Also, I wonder if Griffith would fight Fullmer since it would remind him and fans of his own fatal beating of Paret.
Sure do Romero. I think that Gene Fullmer being a natural 160 lb fighter, with Emile Griffith having to move up from 147 lbs would struggle with Fullmer's rough and tough style in the ring, Emile will hang around long enough because of his speed of hand but I see Gene wearing down the smaller Griffith to stop Emile by round 10. Griffith was stopped by Ruben Hurricane Carter in 1963 and Carlos Monzon in Sept 1971.
Emile is probably the better overall fighter, but as others have already pointed out he's not a better middleweight. Be a severe challenge for Griffth to go the distance
Their respective performances vs Benny Paret suggest Fullmer would be too strong, but then in Dick Tiger, Griffiths beat a better and perhaps even stronger MW than Gene. It's a pick em, imo.
