Joe Louis is my number one and Muhammad Ali is my number two all time. So I am picking Joe Louis over Muhammad Ali, with fair judging, by Majority or Split Decision, with Muhammad getting knocked down once or twice along the way. They are close and I would not argue much against someone who has my top two reversed.

 

I sort of understand where the third person thing comes from, as a sad ultra running addict.

If you occasionally perform at a high athletic level, that is remote from your day to day life, then you start to disassociate from that person.

They become Superman, and you become Clark Kent., and you just get to be Superman for the day.

I ran one of the harder 100 mile mountain races in the world, then a couple of months later I was at the start line of a local half marathon, and I felt nervous.

I thought to myself "FFS am I the same man who ran that 100 miler on the mountains?"

I promise that I will never refer to myself in the third person though!

 

Interesting reading, though I don’t know of any other instances of Louis referring to himself in the third person.

 

Wow! Do I understand THAT! In my case, I sometimes become "The Real Wonder Woman!" Later, I am back to being "Diana Prince." What a ride we are having through LIFE!

 

Referring to yourself in the 3rd person can come across as somewhat pretentious.

Pugguy has been guilty of that on some occasions. No surprise, given the wanker that he is.

Here's what Futch had to say after Holmes beat Leon Spinks. I look forward to you picking Holmes on the merits of Eddie's words when that fight comes up. Eddie saw Louis fight in person even sparred with him and saw every HW champion from the 20's to the 90's.

It is easy now imagining a Larry Holmes beating a Jack Dempsey. And his new trainer, Eddie Futch, even indicated the other day that Holmes could have beaten Joe Louis.

''I consider him a great boxer. I rank him with Billy Conn.'' ''Could he beat Joe Louis?'' Eddie was asked. ''I think Conn could have beaten Louis if he'd been 10 pounds heavier,'' the trainer said. ''Larry is 40 pounds heavier.''

 

Watching the Tommy Farr fight right. First, Farr was a really good fighter in this one. Pulls off some technical stuff that would really make you sit up straight if you saw a HW do it today. I do almost yell at the screen for hm to keep his hands up properly, but he fights a very smart technical fight.

But this is another instance where Louis does not look great against a good boxer type fighter. Credit to Farr, though.

Btw, Farr is another that drops rights over Louis's left. I know HomicdeHank quite correctly will tell me that Ali's right didn't have a lick on Farr's, but just saying.

 

I find that Farr is probably one of Louis’ 5 best heavyweight opponents, or at least one of the 5 most skilled heavys he’s ever faced. Plus, Farr is 204 lbs so he’s a pretty legit heavyweight

also worth mentioning Joe broke his hand in te early rounds, but imo he was still dominant regardless

 

Yesh he was clearly a skilled guy and fought a great courageous fight.
