It just goes to show what we old, Rose Colored Glasses wearing boxing fans have been saying for a long time now: that today's Fighters have nowhere near the skills, guts, resiliency or intensity of the past era fighters.

Haney is supposedly one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world today, and he got beaten by a guy that basically has a very low skill level but is fast and can punch. Even your lower end top 20 Fighters from the past would destroy either one of these guys.

Even after the fight, like in the Clarissa Shields interview for example, who was in attendence in the arena, everyone seemed to be under the impression that Haney has lost his title. So it's more than just DAZN. This is literally insane at the amount of people who were under the impression that Devin could lose his title.

This is low class but expected for the WBC. I hope they rematch because the judges will not be necessary. They did everything possible to gift Haney the win yesterday. Corrupt judge, corrupt ref, etc. Haney is getting knocked out if these guys fight again. It was good to see him exposed.

So you believe that this was unusual what the WBC did here, that normally in this situation Haney would have lost his title?

I'm just trying to understand what other examples there are of a similar situation in which the Champion lost their title after the challenger missed weight.

Yeah, valid question. I thought the belt would be vacated in this instance because Haney lost. Garcia couldn’t be awarded because he missed weight. Isn’t that how it usually goes?

That's what we're all trying to figure out. A good amount of fans seem to agree with you that this is what normally happens, while others say the opposite.

I'm wondering if the WBC came to Haney and gave him the option of making it a non-title fight or keeping it as a title fight. Because with it being a non-title fight now, then it wouldn't count as a defense. And if he rematches Garcia again next, and if Garcia can't make 140 again, then Haney technically wouldn't have defended his title for two fights in a row, which would mean presumably he would have to defend it at some point soon.

Agree man. Can’t stand Haney but the fact is that he made weight and Garcia did not.

Every other argument is smoke and mirrors.

Also, they said at the start of the fight that “Ryan can’t win the belt because of weight and only Haney coupe lose the belt.” I just watched it again and that was what the announcer said. I know it’s not official but I heard it and recall previous fights where the champ could lose the belt even though the challenger could not win it because of weight. I don’t care, and expect Haney to lose against the next prime challenger who can punch. I’d like to see Garcia fight him again for a he belt. It would make sense to do it again but I doubt the Haney team would agree to a rematch so soon. Probably let him fight a scrub next to boost his confidence. Won’t help his punching power because he doesn’t have any.

It should be limited at least.

It would be interesting if Ryan does the same thing missing weight in a rematch. I wonder what Haney would do this time? Just cancel it probably.

There has been more precedent for a fighter keeping their belt if they make weight, and lose the fight to an opponent who fails to make the limit. Diaz-Rojas and Castillo-Corrales II are examples of this that immediately come to mind.

Back in 2007, iirc, Jose Luis Castillo missed weight pretty badly against Corrales and then went on to stop him. Diego still retained the title after that, which makes sense since traditionally fighters have been allowed to retain championships when fighting opponents over the limit.

According to the modern Marquess Queensberry Rules holding is against the rules.

Can anybody who thinks the title should become vacant come up with an example of that happening previously?

(not where the fight was for a vacant title because that wasn't the case here)

This became a non-title fight the moment Garcia failed to make weight. End of story.

My understanding was that in a situation like this, the loser would relinquish his titles but the winner would not earn those titles for failing to make weight.

    Learned something new today.
