Whatever Happened To James Page?

He drifted into obscurity after Andrew "six heads" Lewis beat him. Page was indeed a hard puncher, and floored De La Hoya with 16oz gloves on during a sparring session. If memory serves me correctly, it was during camp when De La Hoya was preparing for his fight with Rivera.

Page was crying out for showdowns with the likes of De La Hoya, Trinidad, and Quartey. He just wasn't marketable at the time, but a percentage of him not getting those big money fights was obviously down to him being a threat. Forrest was pretty much the same scenario.

Page wasn't techincally gifted, but his persistence and power were his main attributes. Boxing ability he had in his locker, but he fairly average in that department.

 

He was inactive for around 1 1/2 years due to injuries before Lewis beat him. A bad knee problem, and surgery was required I think.

 

His fight with Lopez is so underrated. A great welterweight slugfest.

 

i heard he has some brain damage now..i saw that fight with six heads and he did get beat up pretty good

 

I thought he was in federal prison for robbing a bank.

 

He is. Waste of talent though. He hit like a mule. In fact, its ironic he and Lopez fought. Those two might be the two biggest welterweight wastes of talent in the 90's.

He was COMPLETELY rusty, and shot when Six Heads beat him.

 

I remember one time on the way up, he had a fight in Northern California, but he couldn't make it because he got arrested for ****.

I gotta go find my copy of that.

 

Cause he had the talent to have been a real threat to anyone at 147. He shoulda at least won a belt. But the guy wasted his career surfing, and smoking weed, instead of training. He had dynamite power in both hands, threw beautiful combinations, and had a rock jaw. On his best day(like when he destroyed Campas) he'd be a BIG threat to alot of top welterweights. Personally I think that version of Lopez would have beaten the hell outta Margarito. Tony is an easy target, and would have walked right into the Lopez's firepower. And Lopez hit ALOT harder than Cotto trust me.

But anyway, against Page he wasnt at his best, and pretty much gave the title away. He had Page down twice, and on ***** street everytime he let his hands go. He just didnt do it enough.

Agreed, that was a very entertaining fight. I have it on tape somewhere...
