I see Shavers being hurt early before he has a chance to off load any bombs.
    There's a chance its over in 2.

Liston stops him by round 5--too strong and skilled for Shavers. (Earnie might get in an early power shot that would make things a bit interesting but that's about the extent of it.)

Once more, peak Liston didn’t just have power, he was a skilled boxer.

i think the feeling is that shavers gets lost behind his gloves when he is hurt. he takes a shot but it stays with him. he'll get up from being kd'd but he didnt seem to be able to get out of those situations gracefully. what would you call it? good chin, bad resistance?

No stamina...he never had a KO past the 7th round...didn't carry his "power" into the later rounds...never came up with the big punch when he needed it...lousy finisher...KO'd by Jerry Quarry in the first round...BUT...he wasn't a QUITTER like Sonny Liston!

Flush with confidence after two knockout wins over dangerous Cleveland Williams, Liston in black trunks gave Shavers a menacing scowl during the referee's instructions. The Ohioan smiled and shrugged his shoulders and the two men retreated to their corners . . .

I shall again cite a quote from the venerable Ray Arcel regarding Liston's boxing skills:

“Sonny Liston was a great boxer. Lot of people never recognized that, because of his power, but Sonny really could box.”

Earnie catches Sonny with a couple of good shots early, but Liston takes them and proceeds to demolish Shavers in round 3.

One of these days we need to plan a trip to RockyJim's house. We'll pretend to be debt collectors and then we'll tie him to a chair and force him to watch this fight on repeat for 6 hours.
