Prime Roy at what kind of weight?

 

Light heavyweight or even his heavyweight rendition. But with day before weigh ins, he came in the ring at like 180-185, which would have made him a heavyweight in Walcott's day.

 

Looking through RJJ's resume I see no ATG scalps that could match up to Walcott. Jones' best work was done at the lighter weights. Mediocre resume at the higher weights lets be honest.

 

JJW pounded the s**t out of Marciano in their first fight in 1952...do you see Roy Jones pounding the s**t out of Rocky Marciano?...me neither...Marciano breaks Jones in half...Walcott TKO over Jones...

Walcott s power is underrated by many, putting Marciano, Louis and Charles down is impressive.
At some point Jersey Joe gets Jones out of there.

 

Joe has losses to guys Roy's size that were slower with less power and less mobile.

I too would favor the best Jersey Joe over Roy, but I can't say he'd have "no" chance. It's hard to gauge Joe's best because his prime was peppered with wins and losses. I will say Joe's best wins and scalps dwarf Roy's best wins

 

Those don't count because he wasn't at his best. That's how things work around here.

Thats because RJJ fought at LHW. But during Walcotts time the HWs were bloated LHWs. This is the one era of HW Roy Jones would be a normal size HW. If Maxim could fight Walcott close every time its tough to see Walcott beating RJJ on points. And he'd probably have to win it on points because besides the Charles KO which he was handidly winning beforehand he seldom stopped his top opponents. He did not have a major stoppage in the entire 1940s despite no shortage of quality opponents. He KO'd Elmer Ray.....in 1937 when Ray was 8-8. So I don't know where people get this confidence that Walcott is going to KO RJJ. Walcott knocked down Marciano...and then let him stick around the whole fight.

RJJ fought once at HW and at CW in his 40s. He wasn't really trying to compile a resume at the higher weights. That shouldn't be held against him especially against HWs from the smallest era. When Roy was at his peak the HW champ was Lennox Lewis who was 6 ft 6 and weighed nearly 250. And a few years after winning the WBA belt off Ruiz that belt would be held by Valuev a 300+ pounder. Almost that entire generation of HWs would be at LHW if they were fighting in RJJs time.

He was ok in a fight but Jones’s hit and not get hit was unbeatable
