Isn't this the 4th or 5th Canelo fight in a row to go the distance? In fact, if you go back over the last 7 or 8 years, he's had something like 75% of his fights go to the score cards. It just seems odd that this guy who was sold as a bit of a bruiser, a guy who was willing and able to stand in the pocket and go toe to toe and could supposedly knock guys out for fun, now can't seem to put much of a dent in anyone.
I mean, it does seem like he's finding it hard to finish guys off or even get them really hurt. He couldn't put a dent in GGG over 36 rounds (ok, I accept it was GGG after all), and needed the score cards each time, same with Jacobs, and Smith, and Ryder, now Munguia. Let's be honest, he couldn't even knock out Charlo, a much smaller guy who was terrified of trading in the proverbial phone booth. For me, the way he battered BJS is the only genuine example of devastating punching power I can remember seeing from him in a long, long time. He was completely out boxed by Bivol and his weapons nullified, and you notice he has wanted nothing to with that rematch. Canelo, I think, knew that he could face Bivol 100 times and he'd lose 100 times - and two losses in a row to the same guy, or just to the same guy full stop, would taint his legacy somewhat and tarnish the brand. So, they very quietly swerved that and haven't mentioned it since the post fight discussions. It seems like you have to go to 2015-2016 and back to see examples of Canelo really cracking people and putting them out on their backside...and one of those was Amir Khan, who had no business being in with Canelo at that weight. I think it might make an interesting thread to gauge opinion, with the question being "has Canelo lost his punch/knock out power" or words to that effect.
He always had a low KO% at championship level boxing. The confusion seems to come from the fact that he clearly hits really hard, but this doesn´t necessarily translate into KO´s. He rarely ever strings together T/KO victories. Last time he did was in 2021 when he stopped Yildrim, Saunders and Plant. But he hits hard enough to put a lot of people down. His last 3 opponents all hit the deck at one point. So I would say "now can't seem to put much of a dent in anyone" is a bit of an exaggeration here.
It became a mismatch that still delivered on entertainment. The intrigue was gone after the KD and it became high level sparring. Not a great fight.
Yet 40% of the people scoring the fight in the real world had Munguia winning 5 rounds. The majority of people scoring the fight had it 115-112 to Canelo which shows it was a better and much closer fight than you ever anticipated. You shat all over this fight and it ended up proving you wrong.
I said Munguia is much better than overrated to enormous proportions Caleb Plant and it was evident today for everyone he is
Was the outcome really ever in doubt to you? IMO, it wasn't and Canelo was pretty much on cruise control in the very rounds he would have needed to bite down in, had he been in actual great fight. I think that Jaime benefited from the intrigue of a fresh faced, relative unknown giving Canelo competitive rounds. I also think that Canelo has made lots of people root against him. I would like to see how the press scored it, as fans are more swayed by bias, alcohol, party atmosphere, etc. ... Which Morales/Barerra fight did this resemble to you?
Probably the 2nd fight, which was dull for the first 6 rounds before it picked up in the 2nd half. But I even doubt you even watched that fight live. Lol
??? Why would I have failed to watch that live on HBO, drenlou? Anyway, I disagree. The intrigue was in seeing what sort of skill Munguia could bring. Well, he brought zero defense and no counter punching. Canelo worked and landed whenever he felt like it. There was also never any suspense of Munguia actually hurting Canelo with anything. I think that you jumped the gun with your excitement here and now want to justify it... but how can I tell a fan to not be a fan? Do you, brotha.
Welp, I guess I caught it the next week, then. LOL. Got somewhere to be? Enjoy wanking it out over this classic, eh?
I thought Munguia won the first 3 and Canelo was looking in genuine concern til he scored that knockdown. Canelo probably won rounds 4-8 with a KD then after that there were a few rounds that were hard to score. I'd say 115-112 to Canelo is ok and either side of that 114-113 or 116-111. The American commentary I had on was an absolute joke they had it 118-109 which is fantasy.
