What a bummer. I was really looking forward to this bout. But Beterbiev is very injury-prone, and if it truly is a ruptured meniscus, I can’t see him returning in any meaningful way. By January next year, he’ll be pushing forty, with a body that has been falling apart for the last decade.

Not enough is known about his injury. Barring the worst knee problems Meniscus tears are generally recoverable. The ability to return to preinjury level of perfirmance after meniscal repair is up for debate but
I have zero doubt his access to resources and dedication getting it back working well enough to fight on.

Hope were werent trying to delay surgery on it initially, considering he's a boxer id be surprised considering the nature of the sport. We've seen it tried plenty of times though

I've heard a tear in the inner part you describe can be a problem because there isn't enough blood supply in there

At his age, this could be a career ender. He needs his knees for torque, very instrumental to his power...............this might be it for him, he's not gonna be back this year, it'll at least be this time next year....................so next summer for a guy that's already a geriatric boxer........

If he was 27, he could come back from this. He ain't 27 though. I feel bad but it might be time to pull the plug on Beterbiev.

Man is 39 years old. Basically a career ender.

Best bet is to take 1/2 years off, roid up then have a showpony comeback fight like Haye did with Bellew. Sad really, guy deserves that retirement paycheck. I hope he can recover something from it.

People like to ignore injuries but injury for boxers at any stage of their career especially late stage can and will end them. Eye injuries are the biggest early career enders in boxing.

Biggest let down of the past 1-2 years!

Thing is, Biev's last fight was postponed due to some other injury and after the postponed fight he had elevated levels of some PEDs.

Just sounds a bit fishy to me tbh. Reschedule the fight in 6 months time when PEDs have been cycled off.

Man, eff this sport. Bunch of old, past it men fighting and young over hyped cherry pickers running clown shows. It's not even a young mans sport anymore lol - 30-40 year olds still fighting, just embarrassing.

No! Just got back from holiday, been catching up on the boxing news... terrible news. The best fight in boxing was just weeks away, now it'll never happen. This is such a hard sport to follow sometimes. What a bummer.

It may still happen but ironically enough unless Bertibiev wins, it's going to leave a sour taste in people's mouth. I can't see Bivol getting any real credit now if he beats a 40 yo Bertibiev coming off a significant knee surgery.

Knee injuries like ACLs, PCLs, and meniscus tears have a high percentage of turning into arthritis down the road. Soccer, football, basketball, and many other athletes recover well from knee surgeries to continue performing at a high level. Beterbievs problem is his age, but he is a top tier athlete who has apparently lived a clean life and stayed in top condition. So, he has the best chance of any 39 year old athlete to recover and still fight.

hate it for Beterbiev. hate it. it is not the worse injury but it ain't the best. age...what he has going for him is he is at the top of his game and will have the best med care. if he can come back...do think it will limit how long he can continue but that clock was running low already. hope the best for him.

Horrible news and I wish him the best but he will never fully recover from that injury especially given how old he is.
