Golovkin vs Munguia

The only fight Golovkin fought at 168 was his final fight. He was old and slow and couldn't do anything against Canelo until Alvarez ran out of gas. I love Triple G but Munguia beats him when he is on his last legs.

 

I fully agree with this. GGG is way past his best and this isn't the 21 year old version of Munguia either.

 

Even at 40 GGG hits harder than Canelo. GGG would put Munguia down and keep him down.

 

Even this version of GGG beats Munguia. Probably by stoppage too. I rewatched the 3rd fight with Canelo & it was actually a lot CLOSER than what I remembered, & also much more competitive than what the commentators & most fans said. From the 8th round onwards, GGG did excellently and won the last 4 rounds IMO. Munguia fought a more entertaining fight, but won LESS rounds, was hurt much more & was overall LESS effective.

GGG has a better jab, chin, power, defense & Ring IQ than Munguia. He doesn't have to worry about fighting a prolific counter-puncher like Canelo. IMO, he would pick a game Munguia a part with his jab, work the body & land frequent powershots upstairs as Munguia is very hittable. Looks similar to the Ryota Murata fight

 

Canelo ran out of gas, but GGG didn't and won the final rounds. So, GGG did many things against Canelo.

 

Munguia was originally meant to be Golovkin's food and a sacrifice. This is the only reason Munguia is even really known. HBO deep sixed that fight and it never came to pass so Munguia simply simmered until an elite was ready to knock him off, which just happened.

I'd still pick Golovkin, (fight 3 Canelo) over Munguia. He didn't fight bad against Canelo, he just showed he wasn't at his previous level. If they fought next week isn't really a fair question, Golovkin is retired.

 

I think at this point Munguia is a little too much. Prime GGG would destroy Munguia though.

 

Mungia likely wins a unanimous decision at this point but GGG always has that puncher’s chance to turn the fight around in an instant and deliver the knockout shot. I actually find old, shot (or at least semi shot) fighters who still carry big time power some of the most entertaining guys to watch. It often makes for a very unpredictable fight. This mainly applies to fighters who were once greats; I’m not just talking any shot fighter with decent power here. However, at the same time, it does often make me a little sad watching these guys fight well beyond their prime, especially when they end up taking a beating.

 

GGG the mind is willing but the body can no longer pull the punches. He gets outpoint , something in the range of by 10 or 11 rnds.

 

40 year old GGG from Canelo 3 still beats any version of Munguia.
