Prime Liston was a vastly superior fighter, not just puncher. Mic drop.

Don't forget that the second bout with Muhammad Ali was scheduled for Nov 16 1964 in Boston, but due to Ali's unanticipated emergency Hernia surgery, Sonny Liston had to wait until May 25 1965 in Lewiston, Maine.

Plus Sonny Liston's stamina is way better than Earnie Shavers, who tended to run out of gas when it counted.

Yes, thanks for clarifying that's what I meant with the unmotivated part. People in Liston's camp said that after he heard about the injury, he lost his fire in training and languished about having to start all over again when he was in the best shape he'd been in for a while. We also don't really know when Liston was born and have conflicting sources about it, one of which would put his age somewhere in his 40s for the 2nd Ali fight iirc.

The set up for this fight would be kinda similar to Holmes vs Shavers.

Liston (Holmes) is the superior boxer and should win comfortably, but Shavers sure is a live dog and has a puncher's chances.

Most probably outcome is Liston stopping Ernie sometime during the 2nd half of the fight.

That 2nd fight has so many question marks and weird theories going on that could be considered like a weird outlier, not representative at all of what Liston truly was at his peak.
