This, to me, is one of the more fascinating "time machine" matchups. I think Quarry would give Marciano a lot of problems early with his faster hands and effective counters. Quarry did demonstrate in his career that he could take on and beat big punchers (Shavers, Lyle.) But ultimately I think the Rock just grinds him down and wins in a very late round stoppage (between rounds 13-15.)
Rocky stops him late, although Quarry could in the interim, drag him to hell and back. Not an easy fight for Rocky, but a winnable one. Ultimately, I just think Rocky's volume and hard punching overwhelms Quarry.
Rocky would beat him up, badly. Jerry Quarry did not possess the defensive ability to keep Marciano off him in any shape, form or fashion.
Quarry was a counter puncher and could box well not trading punches see the Lyle fight for reference. Quarry also did well against bigger punchers than Marciano like Shavers, Lyle. I'd favour Marciano in this fight but it's certainly not a forgone conclusion, Quarry was tough a good counter puncher and has impressive scalps over Patterson, Shavers, Lyle, Foster, etc.
Sorry we can agree to disagree. I understand why the man is beloved here, but IMO he is painfully overrated on this forum, he topped out where he was destined to top out given his skills, he was never destined to seriously compete for the heavyweight championship and he should have been 0-2 against Patterson who was by far his superior as a boxer and ranks about 20 places higher than him IMO on the ATG list.
I'd have to rewatch Patterson vs Quarry but I remember them being close fights. Patterson was dropped twice in both fights so it's always going to be hard to win a decision getting dropped 4 times in 2 fights.
I've been scoring some classic fights recently i might go back and watch these fights again in the future and then i'll tag you my scorecards.
I just think Patterson did enough aside from the knockdowns to win them both or at worst be 1-0-1. But I understand that is subjective. And I don’t want to seem like a Quarry hater, I honor and respect any man who got into the ring against the people he faced, although I wish in hindsight there had been someone there to save him from himself, but folks here have him competitive against prime young Foreman or prime Tyson, let alone Marciano, because of his vaunted toughness and counterpunching, but I simply don’t see it. The man was Rocky Balboa in real life on defense and I don’t see him keeping any of those people off him, I don’t think he’d last 60 seconds against pre-prison Tyson, Tyson would devour him.
